headers

I have just regular cheap uncoated Hedman headers on the 440 in the Polara. They fit great and have no clearance issues, they are just rusty as all hell. They are a good cheap option for a header to use until you can save up the $$$ for a ceramic coated set. The mating surface that goes against the cylinder head leaves a lot to be desired and the use of a thick "remflex" or super thick copper gasket are a must. I ponied up for the reusable type gasket in the event I need to pull the headers off for some reason. Haven't leaked on me yet!

A lot of people have trouble with header leaks because they don't check the header flange gasket surface. The cheaper headers are usually worse about this but I've seen it on some of the better ones too. A good 10" flat file will do wonders in this area....also inspect the welds for any voids before installation or you might have a leak no matter what you do about gaskets. Just because you buy a new high performance part doesn't mean it's going to be perfect right out of the box.....
