I need some help because i am new to this hobby, I see some trans for sale on this forum, but what i need to know, what would fit behind my 440 1968 Coronet R/T, like what years of cars they come from, what are interchangeable, I know I need big block housing, but what other info should I be considering. Being so far from sellers it is hard to tell condition of said parts, what are the right questions to ask. And yes I may be a tire kicker as I am afraid of buying wrong and none workable parts. Help?

Your bell housing should work ?? unless missing or broken
do you just need a good manual tranny for your car ? or are you doing a conversion from an automatic ?
833 a manual should work from 66 -up

Hey Stuart, what about for a 318? What if I wanted to put a 4 speed in my 68 coronet with a 318? How much should one pay for a rebuilt, or used one?

My car came from factory with a 4 speed but back in I believe 1977 they changed it out to a 727 with a shift kit. If I could find the right price I would like to convert it back. Some body parts I have been told are still on car.

I may be able to help you out with a transmission and shifter, but it is the 23 spline input shaft from a 69 383 Road Runner, the 440 and Hemi,s had the 18 spline input shaft, rarer and a lot more money.

I think the throw out bearing collars changed sizes in 68? The flange that fits into the bellhousing, not where the throwout bearing rides. You should measure your bellhousing opening before you buy a transmission.

Just wondering what price range and how many of the parts do you have? PM me.

The 18 spline trans front bearing and bearing retainer is larger than the same on the 23 spline trans so you need to be aware of that. The fit into the bell housing also is larger. As for prices....I can't help with that very much. My 4 speed setup is getting a Jerico box.

I have a 23 spline 69 Road Runner 4-speed trans available but would need to be picked up in PA too much to ship

As mentioned the 440 got the 18 spline, and for 68 that tranny had the large bearing retainer. You can get away with a 23 spline with the smaller bearing retainer if you either get the appropriate bell housing or get an adapter ring for the large bell housing. I have a fully rebuilt 1968 18 spline available for sale but I want $1500.00 for it. A 23 spline is much cheaper and if you just want a street car it will be fine. Also there are the later 23 spline trannys that had the large bearing retainer so just make sure you get the correct bell housing / tranny combo.

Thanks that is very helpful, but being so far away from most sellers it would be hard to tell what you would be getting until it arrived on door step, that's putting alot of faith in the seller to be giving you the right info. As for my car I will have to get it checked to see what spline I can put in, I do believe it came from factory with a 4 speed. I am coming to PA in July, to carlisle, if I have not done anything by then maybe I could take a look at your tranny. Again thanks for info

the The 18 spline trans and 23 spline tran
in 68 69 has the same bell housing 11in

When buying make sure you get one from a "B" body as the "A" bodys used a different tailshaft.
