Any possibility of at least identifying the type of rear end this is by this picture? I understand that the gear ratio will have to wait until I can spin the tires and count, but apart from that, I haven't the knowledge to identify if it's a sure grip or something else just by looking at pictures.

If it helps any, this is on a '72 Roadrunner. No clue as to whether or not it's original.

8 3/4 and probably original. Look close at the front side and see if there's any tags on one of the nuts holding the center section in. If there are any, it's a good sign that it's never been apart and will tell you what the gear ratio is and if it's a SureGrip by stating what oil to use. IIRC, example is 'SG 3.23' etc. Been too long since I've seen a tag lol

Thanks Cranky, for future knowledge, how do you identify? What characteristics do you look for to differentiate?

That's the only style housing ChryCo used that looked like that that was the 8 3/4. All the others had a cover on the rear part of the center.

Ford had an 8" housing that looked similar but different and looked nearly identical to the 9"....except for size. Btw, I made an edit to my first post.

Thanks a lot Cranky! There's just so stinking much to learn with this stuff, I love it!

Most rears that mom used in her cars....

Cranky, if I ever get stationed back in Texas, I'm bringing you a Cigar. Thanks again!

Hey guys,
What is an 8 3/4 rear end worth, if you want to buy one? Say from a boneyard?

That really depends on the condition it's in, the gears that are in it, if it's a sure grip or open and so on. Well, that and what the market will take which isn't too terribly much these days. Have you priced out your competition?

Depends on the bone yard. Years ago, the Pick and Pulls here were pretty cheap. I was pulling chunks for less than 40 bucks and it didn't matter if they were open or limited slip...but the last complete drum to drum 8 3/4 I sold that had a 2.94 gear and an open carrier went for 200 bucks. It was for a 68-70 B body. 'A' body rears go higher.....
