hi guys , this is my problem : on my 69 charger i swapped the 383 for a 426 hemi and i changed the dipstick of my 727 ( now it's a MILODON ) , we all know how to check the level of the torqueflite ( engine hot at iddle and trans in NEUTRAL ) but on the milodon dipstick it's write : engine hot at iddle and in PARK !! when i check if i'm in park , i'm between add 1 pint and full hot , but if i'm in neutral , like we used to do , i'm below : add 1 pint so which one can i trust ??? i have just changed the oil of the trans and put in it near 3 quarts , i asked year one and they told me that in park or in neutral : that's the same !! i'm sorry but not ! so which one is good ???? thank you

are the dip sticks the same legnth? if they are....and the tranny hasnt been altered by a deeper pan or anything... shove the mopar dipstick in there ...read it....then shove the other one in there ( both readings in neutral like youre supposed to)... read the milodon.... then make your own mark on it somehow....that corresponds with the mopar dipstick . this way youll know rather than guessing,,,,ORRRRRRRRRRRRR....just ignore everything i just said !

if they are NOT the same legnth.... then i dont know what to tellya!

Its probably the way MILODON marks there dip sticks, at least id think, But id go with what dog said if there the same length, but ive never heard anything about park and neutral being the same, and i don't think so, when its in neutral the pump fills converter to get an accurate reading.. If you are using the same dipstick holder, you could check what the original says, i personally would do it the way Chrysler always recommended and then go from there.. Im sure someone will get in hear but park and neutral? I find that hard to believe there the same to get the most accurate reading.

If you didn't change the velve body, check it in neutral like said, make sure it's right with the factory dipstick, THEN mark the Milodon to the correct levels. Just changing the dipstick isn't going to make a difference in how you check the levels

first , thanks for your answers , the pan is the original one , the dip sticks are differents , the milodon is longer but if you put them side by side at the end where you read the level they are exactly the same , the only difference is how they told you how to check the level !!!

check it in neutral, and adjust from there!the level line should be correct, the stick label is kinda universal since it is an aftermarket stick.all of the aftermarket sticks say check in park if anything at all, same stamp for all different models.

Park and neutral are the same except in park the linkage physically locks in to a slot to keep the car from moving. the valve body doesn't know the difference.

actually , it does make a difference. i used to think that also until i was proven wrong by many of our beloved members here that knew more about it than i did!:hello2:

I have rebuilt so many 727's that at one time I could've done it blindfolded although that was 30 years ago. I took a semester of auto trans at a local junior college and used to work at a 4x4 shop that specialized in power wagons. We would take our rides to Pismo and beat them in the Dunes. Lotsa HP and automatics . I dont ever remember an issue with park or neutral.

But what the hell, I'm old now. Maybe I'm wrong.

I hate the fact that you guys are making me have to think. I went out to the garage and dug up my auto transmission manuals. It looks like the fluid path is exactly the same in park and neutral. I haven't seen these books in a long time. My garage is a mess.

anyone know where I can find a wiper motor crank part # 2822273

i get 2 different readings park vs neutral.....also...i had a tranny question a while back. when i started cold...then put in drive directly from park.... you couldnt feel it engage...it would kinda slip....but when someone told me to start it,,,,,put in neutral for a few seconds,,,,then put it in drive...you could really feel it engage. why this is i have no idea but they were rignt. i thought park and neutral were the same also...park just engaging the parking pawl into the parking gear.

im not saying you dont know your stuff....merelly telling you my scenario...AND CLEAN UP YOUR GARAGE,,,,ITS A MESS!

Hypothetically speaking...if TC drainback is an issue...and it is relatively common then the just warming up the car in park could give a false reading if it wasn't driven recently or put into gearor neutral to fill up the TC. Theoretically speaking, if you tested in park and had a drainback issue then you could get a higher reading then if in neutral. Even if you had just put it in park depending on the rate of drainback.

well , all i know about my trans , it's that it was modified to accept until 600 hp , but i don't know what the internal parts are !! , all i know it's that then i stopped to check the level i had a difference between in park or neutral , anyway now i know that aftermarket parts are all wrote the same , and i will check in neutral ( may be a drainback ??? ) thanks again
