Hey guys,

I bought a 1977 cast crank truck/RV 440 , and after getting it home i discovered the 3 and 4 rod journals are trashed and the crank can not be turned. i have a nice 74 passenger car cast crank coming in the mail.

what are the differences between these two cranks. is it that the truck crank is drilled for a 4 speed?

can i use my original cast balancer on the new cast crank with no issues?

i appreciate any and all info you can provide !

as always, thank you in advance !

It may or may not be drilled for a stick. I forget what year but somewhere in the mid 70's, they went with a different thrust bearing that has a larger flange or faces but the smaller bearing can be used on the later cranks. And yes, you should be able to use your cast balancer but I still like to throw them up on a balance machine anyways. The factory balance wasn't that great and you never know if the pistons or rods in the other engine were heavier or not.

Thanks Cranky, i am going to mic the new crank when it gets here and get the appropriate bearings for it. do you know if there are weight differences between the stock rods (1851535) and the LY rods? i know its not a good idea to mix and match them , but can these be used together, or are all 1851535 and LY rods the same? if not , what are the differences?

440 cast should not be drill for a pilot bushing beings how all factory 440 4-spds had a steel crank.
The truck motor probably has the heavy 6-pack rods.

Nope not drilled.

I have a fresh cast crank turned .010 that I don't think I'll ever use.

How wide is the beam at the pin. The big rods will be right at 1 1/4" wide and 9/16ths thick. Stock passenger car rods will have an LY on them...

the beam is right at 1" x 9/16 below the wrist pin. the center of the beam is 1 1/8 if that helps.

Note the number forged into the rod, and the LY code-you have LY rods. Here's a guide for ya's
