Hood Pins : What Where When and Why?

Not a good idea if you have to pop the hood to put out a fire.
I came to the same conclusion, and took it out. Bob also sold me the car for less than the value of the NOS trim he'd put on it. He didn't always make the best decisions, but we are able to laugh about it over 40 years later.

because they are cool:fool:
I would rather not have them but they were already there when I bought the car. It does give it a racy look.

On this subject…..what would it take to change a 70 b-body to an interior “pull handle” hood release?

I would have to ask, what models came with a remote release? Later models for sure. Mopar didn't change the hood latch and how it mounts between models, for many years. Like the trunk latches. I put a remote release on my Swinger. Love it.

74-76 Duster and Dart Sport.
Valiant Brougham and Dart SE.

Sorry, thought A body was specified.

74 started seeing a lot more inside release hoods across all lines.

Therefore- 74-79 B body are good donors.

When I was still daily driving my A12, I replaced two of the hoodpins with aftermarket pins with a bigger thru-hole, and replaced the hairpins with padlocks.
Must have worked. I've still got my hood.

I used four pins on my gutted steel Cortina hood. It never went anywhere either at 130.

What Where When: cars if any came out of the dealers with hood pins? Any? Were the dealers putting any on?

I assume why they were put on was for race application hood security under stress conditions. Anything else?

What do you think of street cars having them? They certainly have a look of business about them. They seem kinda like a wing on the back in terms of not really needed but looks cool on some cars but probably makes other think they look like sh$t?
My 73 Road Runner (340 auto) has them...they're even listed on the window sticker.

I had also been a passenger in a red 68 RR racing in NJ on 78 when it was new. About 100 mph the hood folded over the roof cracked the windshield and the crazy bastard just stuck his head out the window to win!!

hood pins were automatic on fiberglass hood cars such as the A12, TA and AAR and optional on about everything else.

Why is relatively obvious on the glass hood cars but on the steel hood cars it was really more ascetic and to give the owner that race car feel, much the same as hood scoops, stripes and spoilers.

I like them if they are tastefully done. I installed them on my wife’s blown SRT and they are kit from Mopar.. Nice kit from the parts dept.

Bigger thing on my hands but always fun to think a few steps away..
