Hoovie buys a Superbird

I worked with a guy that had an uncle that owned the local dealership (he had the same last name as the name of the dealership anyways) and says his uncle did remove the wing and nose from a car that just sat in the showroom for way too long. I didn't care for those cars back then either and have heard of other dealers doing the same thing. The non-winged cars were popular so it was cost effected to pull off those parts instead of just selling the car wholesale or taking a loss on it.....

I know of two that sold at the local dealer here in Pa. They still exist. I’m not saying it never happened but, that would be a lot of work for not much gain. The front end would have to be completely replaced, and the wing would leave big holes to fill. Now you gotta paint the whole car. It seem as tho you’d do better just discounting the price of the car.

After all that work, all you would have is a left over Road Runner. $2500, maybe.

I believe in 1970, the Dodge Charger won the most races. 10. The Charger not the Daytona, as the Charger ran at a lot of the smaller tracks.

Yeah, I have seen only one 69 Charger 500
Wright-Patterson AFB, 1984
Dayton Ohio
Parked in a Storage lot and the owner was a Captain in the Air Force
Dark Green, 440...Gorgeous

Yup
100 percent Cranky

It’s not a bad price for what he got. I actually thought it might go for a lot more. But it most likely is a crashed, rusted beyond what was available at the time, or in a fire car that had a VIN switch. I know of a few of those that got a different body back in the 80’s. I’d prefer an original Chrysler body as opposed to 70% Chinese sheet metal anyway.

The beginning of this video sounds like a broken record since you hear stories like this over and over again. I even experienced it myself. At this point i really felt sorry for hoovie.

But then i was really surprised how little they found wrong with the car and the low estimate of 3400$.
Maybe he is lucky but i can't get myself to believe 3400$ is all it takes to sort this car out!

I will follow this project :)

This is a pure case of dumb and dumber... Not sure which is worse, the idiot who bought the car or the "wizard" who is going to scam the first guy. I know there are some here who like both of these guys but I most definitely don't. For you wizard fans look up his mistakes video... I wouldn't take anything I owned to him but then I don't take any of my vehicles anywhere so I guess thats not saying all that much.

They lost me at... wizard.

And Bring a Trailer refunded him 5k on what they would have made. He's making out ok. I thought the underside would have been rough but it looked rather clean and any, supposedly metal work, was done right as far as you can see. Just get rid of those hideous wheels!

This all stems from one story of a guy who worked at a dealership, and recalled seeing the guys in the body shop throw a wing and nosecone assembly in the dumpster after converting a Super bird into a Road Runner because the dealer couldn't sell it. It happened to the one car at one dealership and the story was told over and over and it grew into people believing that this was standard practice and that this happened to many cars on a regular basis. The truth is that it is one guys story about one car,at one dealership. There were quite a few wing cars that had the noses replaced with standard Charger and Road Runner noses due to accident damage, which further added to the myth that dealerships were converting cars back in standard Chargers and Road Runners on a regular basis.

Yup. 1978, An accident. A ‘70 Satellite 4 door in the junkyard. There’s my front end.

I'm NOT as smart as you guys ....
I WAS 16 in 1970...
I remember these cars
And in my opinion/memories: They could not sell them...no one wanted them, not practical
So, I'm going with the Story: Some were converted back to a Non-wing, Non-nose car

Here in the northeast they were appreciated. Maybe it was just where you are.

Why wouldn’t they just discount them?

All those parts and paid labor... for a bottom dollar Road Runner?

I won’t buy it unless I see some written proof.

Them again, I don’t believe the story that this Superbird was a race car and got t-boned, then had the center section of a Road Runner grafted in.

Show me some pics.

I was in Rhode Island at the time...
Talking 1969/1970
On the I-95 through Providence RI one afternoon a Red one (Plymouth) so it was 1970...went by us on the highway...
Awesome looking My Mom was driving her 1969 VW Beetle, (4-speed, black exterior, red interior). Ha Ha
Anyway, we were in of course the Fast Lane I-95 heading North...this Bird flew by us in the slow lane
Certainly quite a sight

I'd Love to own one, not a clone

I wouldn’t mind a clone. I actually like this one better before they put the vinyl top back on it.

There was an orange Superbird that sat in a yard in East Providence for twenty years, and another orange one that was later painted blue by Earl Scheib that sat behind a house in Providence for about 25 years. The guy Arnold who owned that car, bought a white 4 speed Superbird from the Marlboro Massachusetts area. He still has the white car. The orange/blue car was very rough and was sold on Ebay in the early 2000s. There was a. Orange 4 speed Superbird that was sold to a body shop owner from Attleboro Massachusetts that came from a junkyard in Assonet Massachusetts. Mario had his lime green Superbird since the early 70s in Central Falls. The lime green car, the orange car,and another Petty blue car are all now owned by the same person in southern Massachusetts. There were several around the area,as well as 4 Daytona Chargers that I knew of,plus Mark aka Richard Cranium on here had three Daytona Chargers too,and he lived right in the city where I grew up,Attleboro Massachusetts. Mark's Daytona's were F6 green, Red and orange. If I remember correctly. There was no shortage of wing cars in our area.

IIRC there was a problem in the state of Maryland, where I lived at the time, with legally licensing them. No front bumper was the problem and Maryland required that. Maybe someone else remembers this and maybe other states had the same problem.

I think there was also a federal bumper law that would go into effect on January 1,1970. And why all Superbirds were made before the new year.
