how did yall get hooked on mopars

I have 4 brothers2 chevy 1 ford 1 Mopar....the mopar was a 66 cornet I helped him put a 440 4spd in...we pulled that motor from a ex cop car...when he was done his car was hard to beat....at about the age of 14 after I wouldn't stop bugging him he let me drive it in front of all his friends... he said go 4 houses down and park it....my last words were...ok Im going around the block....when I got back I was glad his friends were there!!! 2 years later I bought a 71 Cuda. His car got me hooked big time

For me it was later in life after by raised on Chevys and Fords all my life. One car show I went to I saw a 69 charger rt and I was in love. My first was a 69 Superbee that was an original 383 car and the previous owner dropped a 440 HP in it and added the A-12 style hood and magnum wheels.

It is posted in the February Mopar Musle Mag under pentastars pg 48 February 2007. I liked the car but it was not super nice so I sold it to someone that started racing it.

In 2010 I traded my truck for an 09 Challenger SRT 8, added a predator, catch can, strut, thermostat and flowmaster exhaust and got it to run a 12.9 one time in Bowling Green Ky.

Traded that for my current truck and last Saturday bought the car I have now and plan to keep as I am getting older and need to slow down on toys. All are attached below.

You all got to enjoy the glory years of mopar with cool cars! I bought my first Mopar, a 75' baby poo green Duster with the mighty slant 6. Was this a rusty bucket..... paid $50 did a lil work on it and proceed'd to drive the piss out of it! Drove it without oil, water, & gas most of the time lol. I LOVED that car soooo much, & no one could understand. This was back in 1990 and I was 15. I have not bought anything other than Mopars ever sense. Now I'm a father of 4 and we all have Mopars.

After watching Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and Bullit,I knew I would have to have a Charger,a 69 R/T,and it had to be a black one.Scored a 69 R/T SE 3x9,stripe delete,PW,A/C,AM/FM,PDB,Tach,rocker moldings,rear defrost,headrests(early car),auto on column,buddy seat.

my dad was a chevy guy, but his cousin was a chrysler guy superbees, roadrunners, chargers, ect.in 1978 he took us for a ride in a 70 hemi cuda. need i say more!

the year was 1976, i am a passenger riding shotgun in a 1969 RR 440 six pack, 4spd heading to newport R.I. my friend and i had just given someone he had known a ride from newport to providence R.I. for gas money and some beer money. when we got to providence the guy had said wait here and he would go inside and get the money from his friend. a half hour later we figured out that we been had and there was no sign of this guy. my buddy was freaking boiling mad, and we headed back to newport. about a 1/4 way into the trip back my buddy say watch this. all i heard was the throaty sound kick in and we were gone. im like freaking cool. we were passing cars like they were sleeping at the wheel. i looks over at the speed o and gods honest truth it was buried WAY WAY beyond the 145 to the point i could not see the needle. cars looked like they were going 20mph and im like this is awsome. this is on I-95 headed back to newport. when we got back to our houses he went to the neighbor to borrow some gas money. when we came back out to go get some gas the front tire was FLAT. talk about luck. a few months he let me drive the car back home for my 16th birthday. my foot was shaking so bad on that clutch i could hardly drive the car. a bit intimidated i was for sure. he was laughing the whole time and kept saying dont be afraid of it. i was for sure. from that day on it was my mission to own one of these cars. and to this day i still think they are the coolest, fastest, best looking cars to own. thanks for the cool thread, brought back a special memory.....

I didnt grow up in a car family. My father couldnt even be bothered to check oil. Parents divorced when i was around 10, but he hadnt been around much at all before that anyway. My very early teen years i was pretty much unsupervised and running wild. Getting into trouble no 12 year old should be getting into. A few brushes with the law and its off to live with pops. Cant blame mom. She had to work the 7pm to 7am shift as a nurse to make ends meat. That left me home alone. Anyway, getting back to the point, dad had himself a girlfriend who had a son the same age as me. Her second husband(not her sons father) was/is a mopar guy. Her son was still friends with him and when i showed up is when i discovered mopars. Up until this point i had never even heard the term mopar. I new the general lee was a dodge charger but thats about it. Now i was 14 and i was hooked on mopars. Reading all the magazines and books that i could. But it wasnt until i rode in my first muscle car that it really hit me. The guy had a 68 coronet R/T. 440 auto on the floor. Center console with black bucket seat interior. QQ1 blue. I can remember that ride better than losing my virginity. He was messing with the carb and we were on a test drive. I was in the back seat and when he stomped that bitch i thought i was gonna slip between the seat back and seat bottom. It literally felt like someone had a rope around my waist and was pulling me through the seat. The rest is history. That was about 25 years ago. The guy became my mentor and a father figure. Teaching me about cars and how not to be the punk loser i was becoming on my own. We are still friends to this day.
Im in the hurst shirt. The fathers girlfriends son on my right, a friend of ours from school on his right and the mentor on my left

Was a chev' guy...blew up a 283, 265, :icon_cherry:also owned a '66 427 vett' roadster (just plane dangerous )
BUT lot of "down time".....then with the advice of a friend went to a Mopar (64 ply 383 4 speed) I beat the $hit out of it! :violent1:and it could take it....many mopars later I never looked back.......

Well I didn't grow up in the glory days but I was around muscle cars usually owned by friends parents. A good friends dad has a 70 Chevelle SS LS6 4 speed car which got me truly hooked on muscle cars. I helped a friend of mine half *** restore a 72 Buick skylark for his first car and wanted something so bad. 10 years later after owning several Dodge trucks and our family slowly turning from GM to Chrysler products because of reliability I decided to build a car. I was looking at anything I could find from the 60's and 70's and then I came across the craigslist ad for a 67 Coronet 2 door post....didnt know what that was but I liked it....week later it was in the driveway.

Back in 1970 I met my future father-in-law, who was a State Trooper. One night he invited me to go with him on patrol in his Fury. I was about 19. He clocked a car going in the high nineties in the oposite direction on the interstate. Next thing I know we went through the median and caught up to that car in about 2 miles, before he put on the blue lights. Up to that time, I had never been that fast in a car before.
Several months later he traded in the family 1969 Dodge station wagon on a 1970 roadrunner, totally surprising his wife. I got to take the roadrunner out on a date and fell in love with it. (wait a minute, was I tricked)

Back in 64 I was in high school. My best friends older brother was the manager of the Texaco station in our town. I thought that he was the coolest guy on the planet, plus he was old enough to buy us beer. He bought a brand new 1964 Dodge Polara hardtop that he ordered from the local dealer. It had a 426 wedge and a 4 speed. It was black with a red interior. I will never forget how that car looked, sounded, and the smell of burning rubber. I was hooked like a carp flopping around on a hot dock. I've loved Mopars ever since.

Nice Charger!!

What a great thread. I was about 14 in the late 70's and was always a motorhead but ready to graduate from go-karts and mini-bikes.
A guy in our small town in upstate ny had a 69 roadrunner, panther pink, 383 4-speed with low gears like 4.56's. The quarter panels had been cut to fit Mickey Thompson N 50-15's on chrome reverse wheels. When he was leaving town and going through the gears, the front end would raise up with every shift and give me goosebumps.
2 years later I found a 69 Coronet R/T on the side of the road for sale and bought it for 550 dollars and still have it. My parents said they would split the cost of my first car, but when they saw the R/T,they said NO WAY!
My mom said I would get tired of that car and made a 10 dollar bet with me that I would want to sell it and get a different car within a year. We made a note and both signed it and it is still on the back of her kitchen cabinet door. That was in 1980.

In 1972 my grandparent's moved to "town". To make up for selling my uncle's horse they agreed to buy him a used '69 road runner. He ran the piss outa it! It made a VERY strong impression on me at an early age. Uncle jon had many more cool mopars; 4 road runners, a dart gts, a couple chargers, a t/a challenger, a few power wagons.
Of course being a young hell raiser in the seventies jon would stay out all nite being up to no good. This drove my grandpa nuts!!! To be onry & pull my uncle's chain granpa would take jon's cars for joyrides and I'd get to go along. Grandpa was not afraid to put them through their paces! We almost got the dart airbourne cresting a shrp hill w/ the needle buried. Grandpa & I laughed about these trips until he passed away. RIP

In high school a friend told me about his neighbor selling his son's road runner that had been parked for the last 15 years. I had the money but my dad said no way in hell! He didn't want to see me doin' as my uncle had...another guy my age I knew bought the car. That stung! When we were in college freshman year He traded the road runner for a 280z. against EVERYONE'S wishes & advice I purchased my baby. We are still together. Hooked for life. Even have mopar tattoos...no goin back!

Started Driving My First Mopar At 16; A 1954 Plymouth Savoy Flat-Head Painted 86 Different Color Blues; Was Ashamed To Take My Girl Out In It But It Had To Do; Bought A Hemi '68 Charger And Cruised The Loop With That; Went On To Circle Track Racing, Drag Racing And Boat Racing Mopar Powered Vehicles; Went To Work For Mopar Performance In Michigan And Ended Up Driving The Transport Truck For A Nascar Craftsmen Racing Mopar Truck Team. I Have Met Almost All NHRA And NASCAR Drivers, Including Garlits, Nicholson, Stahl, Stiles, Strickler, Sox, Landy, Jenkins, Earnhardt Sr., Bonnett, Allison, Farmer, Lund, Labonte, Pearson, Gant, And The King, Richard Petty, Whom I Met While Sitting On The Pit Wall At Talledega Speedway, Alabama. He Was Walking Back To His Motorhome With A Loaf Of Bread In His Hand! He Stopped To Talk To Me And I Will Always Remember Those Sunglasses, The Hat, And The Petty Smile! Have Enough Stories To Write A Book...Can't Do It Here!

I always wanted a Mustang when I was a kid. I thought that would be my first car. Fast forward to high school. My dad said he'd lend me some money so I could buy a nice stereo or a used car. LOL - no kidding. I was working at a service station at the time. One Sunday morning 32 years ago (which seems like 5 minutes ago) I was sitting in the office waiting for the next full service customer to drive up when I see the black fender of a '70 GTX slowly pull up to the window. It was my boss in the car he'd told me about but I'd never seen. It was for sale. The hook was firmly set on the test drive when I felt the fury of the 440 6bbl as I ran through the 4 speed. Nothing had ever slammed my back into a seat like that before. What stereo? This was my first car.

Looking farther back, I suppose my Mopar seeds were sewn when I rode in our across the street neighbors' brand new '68 Charger. I loved that car. My racing heroes were Big Daddy and King Richard, so it all adds up. I never did buy that stereo. And I never missed it.

I got into cars just when Garlits brought out his rear-engined car and pro stock started up with Sox and Martin kicking butt. Then an older friend took me for a ride in his 1970 340 Duster and showed what power shifting was. Got my '71 Cuda in 1977 and still have it.

Don't have the great father son stories or the lost teen stories (my dad, 4 brothers and 3 sisters were all horse people. some still are)(I can't stand horses) anyway; while in tech school for auto mechanics we worked on everything imaginable. I always found the Mopars easiest to work on and they had a "different" look then the Camaro's and Mustangs. Bought my '69 Formula S Fastback (wish I could find one of those for sale now) in high school and have been hooked ever since. besides, it's damn difficult to deny the power, legend and romance of a 426 Hemi...
