How many here are retired but still go to a job somewhere besides working on your own stuff.

I've said this before. I retired at 57 after coming back from a major heart attack. Stayed for a year and then bye bye. Financially I had prepared for that moment for a very long time so I could go whenever it was time. My 2nd act was to teach english as a second language - in other countries and at home. I had taken a 2 yr certificate program at U of CA. When I started teaching it was here as a volunteer altho I could have gone for a paid position but $$ wasn't necessary. I wanted to do some pro bono good in the world. After about a year and a half I decided while I enjoyed teaching I didn't like all the prep work - developing lesson plans and the like. I didn't like it during my cert program and less so doing it in the field - so I bailed on my long planned for 2nd act.

Then one of my previous brokers called me to be a consultant for them on a contract basis. Asked me how much I wanted and how much did I want to work. We agreed on terms, I did it for about a year and then said no more I'm done working for my life cycle. Honestly I'm not really that industrious any more unless I find a project I really enjoy. Not lazy I just have no interest in work - only pleasure. I always like to say "I manage the staff here at the mansion" Since there are none it's a pretty easy gig.

My thing has always been business not really working with my hands, so in that regard I had always set myself up with a pretty low maintenance lifestyle outside of work. My wife of 23 yrs is 20 years younger and makes very good $$ and has excellent bennies - in fact as an RN in a union system she can go down to 2 12's a week v 3 and be part time and still get full benefits so that's what we're going to do soon to ramp up travel make sure we're maximizing our time together. We've both had serious issues occur and like the saying goes - The one thing you can never get more of is time. So spend it wisely.

I maintained my law license for two decades after my general counsel job went away, thinking I might get back into it on a limited basis when I parked my truck last year. It didn't happen. No part time work available. Full time only, employers looking for kids to work 80 hours a week for nothing, with the slight chance they might get ahead based on the experience. My attorney thought she might use me as a mentor for her associates, until she considered my finances (she's aware of every penny I've got) and figured I had zero incentive to put up with the inevitable frustrations, and wouldn't last.

Pro bono work in my state has to be performed through a sanctioned legal aid group. They all have an agenda that wasn't compatible with my abilities or interests., my attorney called it a complete waste of my skill set. I looked at some areas that didn't require my license, and they were being staffed by student interns or Penn State faculty volunteers, all trying to enhance their resumes.

Former trucking boss called me about consulting for him on his current gig. I told him about what happened with my attorney, told him it would break his budget to pay me enough to go live out of a suitcase again. Wife has accepted that I have zero worth on the job market or volunteer work at this point, and she's finally okay with it.

Who has time for a job... . still out here!

My shop used to be my side hustle but lately I'm doing things for myself. I retired in 06 at 55.
I work here and a few other "Joey" sites. No pay but lots of fun. Well most of the time.

Years ago I was working 4 sites and all owned by different people. Didn't go looking but was asked....

I'm sure some have heard this before...

I semi-retired at 38 y/o in 1997, from construction GC...
I also wanted to be a Prof. Golfer PGA Senior Tour by 50 years old
I did a crapload of semi-pro mini-tours stuff, mostly west coast...
I had a nice nest egg (sort of)...
But mostly to spend more time drag racing, traveling & matchracing...
My golfing was side gig, I opened a Golf Pro-shop,
across the street, in a shopping center from my Country Club...
I did club repairs fitting for new custom-built clubs/sets :blah:
and sold merch./retail, lots of polo shirts, hats, shoes, balls,
custom wedges, iron sets, putters & drivers,
& it gave the kids a safe/good place to work too...

I could do my consulting & construction facility management
out of there too...
Or while I was on the road, traveling to god knows where
& with Lisa & the kids & going to the kids sports etc.
I rarely could prior...
I had a very full plate...

I still did a lot of dealership consulting, mandated 40 hrs a month billing,
under contract, to the dealership group, I worked for exclusively then...
I did double that on average... $$$
I chose & picked jobs I wanted to do & pass the others "on to others"...

I was sort of more of a contractor coordinator of sorts, a project manager
jobs I didn't want myself...
I gave it to the guys who worked (used to) for me...
I signed off to get their own contractors' licenses,
set them up working in the dealerships group or guys that did piece work,
gave me a finders fee or a % of the contract...

I figured it out relatively quickly...
You can (or I did) make better $$$, someone else & multiples of them,
doing the work & not physically doing it myself...
Me managing it...

I worked way more hrs a month after semi-retiring
than I ever did when I working full-time construction,
running 2 - 3 (4-ish) businesses
#1 construction/facility mgmt
#2 Golf Proshop, club repairs/fitting, retail sales & golf lessons
#3 drag racing/4th-ish rodeo (Lisa's bookings), yes they are a business

I kept busy
Every time I built a racecar for myself for a while, I built 2
another 1 that was almost identical, 26 in total...
(cheaper to buy multiples too)
I usually sold the other (13) to a friend, they helped/funded my builds...

But just more stuff using my brain, my skill-set, than using my Braun...

Far fewer miles on the company trucks, far fewer trucks
& far fewer expenses too...

Especially workman's comp insurance, it was like I worked for the damn ins. co.
I put a halt to that **** 20%-21% of ever $$ I made, right off the top
before any labor or any expenses etc., for a long, long time...
Construction is pretty tight margins, not that much in profit,
especially working in any "Union environment" industry/society/workplace,
they want their piece too, just like mob ****, literal strongarming...

I just spent more of it time & $$$ out on the road
doing heads-up drag racing/match racing, Altereds, T/S or Outlaw Pro-stock
or doing Rodeo (Lisa's passion), horses & transport ain't cheap...

I still did construction jobs, built a couple of smaller dealerships
mostly a bunch of updates and corporate-type remodels,
just the ones I wanted too, very selectively...

I fully & I finally retired, I started to collect S/S in 2021, at 62 y/o...
Empty nester, Kids all grown, girls all married off, boys doing well
1 kid still in the Navy (lifer) or living on their own...
I own everything I have, no family, just taking care of my dad now
(like have been since 2007-ish)

Nah, nothing out there interests me....unless I get a recall to Active Duty. That most likely wont happen, but it is the only work that I would "un-retire" for.

With a real actual 20%-40% inflation,
some food is like 100% more
gas/fuel is 100% more
some insurances are 50%+ - 60% more
some building materials are now almost 100% more than they were
it's not getting any easier either, since Jan 2021
& it's only going to & it's getting worse every month...

This is when I’m eligible.
Mama and I will assess further when it gets closer.

Don’t forget the 20% loss in retirement accounts..

Still working, and probably will be till I drop dead on the job.....or I can't get out of bed in the mornings.

I don't think I could handle the 'nothing to do' scenario.

While doing my share here at the sites, I still need more than this to fill my days.

Trust me. If you retire there is NEVER a "nothing to do" scenario...
My neighbour across the road has been retired nearly 10 years, and he says he's busier than ever. And he worked at Auckland Airport in maintenance.

After 30 years (15 as side work and 15 full time) I retired from my paint&body restoration business. After about 4 years I got bored and missed it so I've started up again. My shop is at my house so it was easy to pick right back up again. I am being very picky about what jobs I take though. Here's what I'm currently working on, a70 cuda and a 69 Super Bee.

I retired in 2020 at the age of 55.

But I work quite a bit. I drive up to my father-in-law's and help him 2 days a week. No pay, but I learn a lot about building engines. I also help with my parents. My dad has Alzheimer's so I help my mom with finances and basically anything she needs done. I also help my uncle with his foundation; it provides education scholarships for needy and deserving kids (mostly vocational courses).

I worked for years in a large corporation with emails and company politics every day. I'm done with that.

So I stay plenty busy now - I just don't make any money!
