How many shop hours?

Here’s part of the invoice

The last 8-3/4 with sure-grip that I had rebuilt locally here cost me under $500.....

The head I gave the guy needed some work .......

With more effort might have got the sure grip rebuild done for free!

When I read your reply I ejected coffee out my nose. Thanks

7 hours to disassemble and inspect. Fail on that one. 8 hours to assemble, generous but not outrageous.

When it firs went in, they said they were 6 hours into test driving, disassembling and diagnosing. They said it would be about 3 more hours once the ring gear and pinion came in. That would have made it 9 hours, so not sure how they got to 15.

They didn't quote any costs, this shop doesn't do that.
Then you got hosed. Sorry. ^^^ then you find a shop that does.

looks like you paid one tech to watch another one do 8 hours of work. at least in our shop each tech's name is next to their work hours.

I think you got hosed. Price for parts was on the high side. $75 for wheel seals?? DoctorDiff has complete rebuild kits including bearing and seals for $85.

As far as r&r, that is 8 hours max. I can do one on jack stands in 6 hours, including setting the gears up.

Parts prices are pretty much double in Canada, the labour is what's in question. It can be painful living here at times.

Oh that is absolute GOLD there....I wrote the post at about 5:30am before heading off to work......I wish I had proof-read it first now.

I just read that out to my wife and now she wants to know what else I get up to.

I recently swapped out my 391 and installed the 323. The actual time to remove, install and set up the axle bearings took about 3 hours. If I had paid a shop to rebuild the 3rd member going back in that would have cost around 1800 here in San Jose.
Good luck and welcome to the expensive world of older car restoration. Everything costs double!

Don't know what is normal or acceptable in your country.
In my state, California it is the law to get an itenised estimate before the work starts.
Any increases in the estimate must be verbaly approved and documented. These are initialed when you are present.
We use flat rate manuals that have the labor time pre established my Mitchell and other Manuals for specific jobs.
You do not pay for surprise bill incrteases. You can contact the State Bureau of Automotive Repair to make complaints to.
But that is here not there.
You must be your own advocate and not say something after the fact. Too late then.
