1978 full size Dodge with a 440 and four bbl. carb. Stock oil pan and useing the longer oil filter. ...How many quarts of oil is correct ? I may have the wrong dipstick and tube
Also the cross link on my 64 Dodge B body barely touches the pan with the wheels straighrt ahead. everything is new and mounted correctly. How can I gain a little more clearance? .. Thanks for any help..........................................MO

5 quarts is all you want with a stock pan! As for as the clearance problem. Not much you can do short of pulling the pan and hammering on the pan where it rubs!

I bought this 440 engine from a full size Dodge --all original. I put on a regular larger oil filter, put in 5 quarts, run the engine, and it shows a quart low on the dipstick. And I checked to make sure the dipstick was all the way into the tube. I wonder if Mopar could have used a 6 qt. pan on this engine? that would solve the drag link clearance problem too. . No way I'm going to beat on it with a Hammer. There has to be a logical explanation..................................MO

dont know of any 6 qt car pans, plenty of truck pans thogh.rear sump or center sump?how about a pick of you problem.

there is/was a 6 qt pan for the '70-'71 six-paks and hemi's. don't know for sure but maybe some of the cop car engines used this pan also. this pan is available as a repop..

OLD FARTS DUHH MOMENT DEPT.

I hate to admit this, but I am strong enough to take abuse!! I been thinking about the problem in my first Post in this thread. Probably way over-thinking it! When the stench of burning brain finally drifted away--I got a revelation. A long time ago when I was collecting parts for my engine, the pan was out of a C body and I needed a B body pan to make things work right... I remembered, finally, that I got a 6 qt pan..... DOAH !!!( said while slapping my forehead with my hand)
What would work better, shimming up the motor mounts or modifying the cross link for clearance to the pan?................................MO

you might be able to fudge the geometry of the center link enough to get it to work, but will it be alignable?you could modify your pan, depending on your skill set.(do a cut out and weld it up)the easyest is to buy a new pan,not too pricey,on many sites.
