How old is too old for highway tires?

I had Eagle ST tires on my car and I liked them, twenty something years ago. My car sat in the garage for almost twenty years out of the sun. After a lot of work, I finally got her back on the road and the tires that were on it rode nice for a few trips out. I knew I needed tires, but I was hoping to wait awhile. I was out one day, not far from the house when the car felt like a wheel coming off. I got back home to discover that I had a seriously mis-shapened tire. I took that wheel off and laid it on the ground. While I was looking at it, the tire started coming apart. I was lucky that I wasn't driving at highway speed and really messed up the rear quarter that I spent so much time on.

Hey friend, thanks for selling me the used tires I now have on my car. Your opinion on them really makes me confident driving the car to Carlisle next month. You just earned yourself a place in my passenger seat for the drive up there.

I know my tires are old, they are Goodyear eagle STs and those haven't been made for awhile, but I drive my car a lot and have not had any issues (hopefully that lasts). This is the last season for them though, switching to BFGs next year.

Good thread. I thought about this last year when I replaced the tires on my
'68 Road Runner that I purchased in 1993....the BF G's were 17 years old!!!

NEVER again. I will not drive on tires that old.

Well I've been in the tire racket for 40 years now.I currently manage Big-O tires up here in the north country. The life expently of a tire is 5-6years from manufactor date.Which is usally done if you run them 24/7.What happens is over the years the tire loses her natural oils and laticty and the tire starts to channel crack. The trick is to keep the the tire away from the natural elements when putting your unit away for the winter. If you park your car outside, get the tires off the ground and cover them up and if you have access to to nitrogen that is tire life extender.Happy motoring.
