How the heck do I get my engine running right?

To the OP I hope your problems are resolved already. Some more ideas while your working on the distributor. Make sure the shaft turns freely and has almost no play, bearings can wear out. See that the mechanical advance moves freely, the weights move freely, and the springs are not missing, broken or stretched. Check the advance can as well. The diaphragm can fail causing a vacuum leak, or failure to move.

I ruled out the distributor when I adjusted the vacuum advance. I did find a burnt distributor cap, a broken #7 plug cable, and 3 burnt boots. The engine was running on 8 or 7 cylinders depending where the #7 plug was hanging out and 2 cylinders having iffy spark. There's little wonder why I couldn't get it run right!

I haven't order anything yet. Here's what I'm thinking of getting:

Wire looms (to keep the plug wire off the steering shaft):

Taylor ThunderVolt 8.2mm with Ceramic boots (to protect against burnt boots):

Taylor boot ends (stock style):

Or should I go with HEI style?
