Kia's really stepped up their game over the years, and those warranties make it a pretty safe bet. I’ve been keeping an eye on Hyundai too—some of their models like the Tucson have been catching my interest lately.

kia got a serious quality upgrade when they were bought by hyundai.
hyundai it's self made outstanding quality improvements in the mid to late 1990's.

The hyundai kona (in OP) is a good car.
My wife bought a "last year's model" '20 for 21.5K out the door.
Plenty of power and average 36 MPG plus.
Not one issue in 36K miles.
...and I fit in it which is more than I can say for many larger vehicles including current Chargers and Challengers.

This is not the 1980's anymore.

We are on our 5th Kia vehicle, all Sorentos and a Sportage. Why I am a customer of the Kia brand - On our way to Florida 3 years ago. We were about 30 miles outside of Charleston WV on I-77. The car for some reason would not go above 35 MPH. Here we are in the mountains of WV and its getting dark( and I thought I heard banjos). Called the 800 number and they immediately started the process of taking care of us. They were able to locate exactly where the car was and a flatbed showed up in 1 1/2 hour. Driver took us to the Kia dealership back in Charleston to drop off the car. Then the driver took us to the hotel. Next morning we shuttled to the dealership. They told us it would be a week to repair the car and notify us when its done. Told them we were on our way to Florida for vacation. They stated that was fine and the car will be ready for when we were on our way back home. They sent us to the rental company next door and we got another car and continued our trip to Florida. Day 6 down in Florida, got a call from the dealership and the car was ready for pickup when we got back up there. Ask what was wrong with the car, and they said it was the No Knock Harness. Ok, see ya in 6 days. Got back to Charleston WV at the dealership and picked up the car to complete our trip back to Michigan. Car had 41k miles on it, so the parts and labor were COVERED. The Towing was COVERED. Hotel bill was COVERED. The Rental car was COVERED. Kia even stated that if we wanted to, we could send in the receipts to cover most of the times we ate out. I didn't bother.

As samefredd stated in the above post, their warranties are outstanding.

They had struggles with quality and reliability issues for years. My brother and his girlfriend both own Hyundai's, now, different models and both had engines replaced due to oil consumption issues at about 80,000 miles. He thought that it was so nice of them to replace them, he just bought another.......... He showed me his new one the other night when we went out for dinner. Some hybrid SUV, I'm not interested.

Perfect timing for this thread, my 80 year old buddy I am helping with his 73 Duster project needs a new 4wd SUV type car for his wife and asked me to help him find one. I know of a few to stay away from like the chebby Traverse and the GMC Acadia, and of course his Trailblazer.
What do you guys think/recommend? Are Kias and Hyundais the way to go now?

I have no personal experience with the Mommy Missiles, but I'd think Toyota or Subaru would be a more reliable choice.

The V-6 models had a bad timing chain problem (OHC) and the Trailblazer was plagued with electrical failures too. The newer diesel versions are supposed to be OK I have heard.

Same thing happened to my mother-in-law years ago, Camry burned to the ground with an engine fire. Everyone else in the family did well with them.

They are decent in general, but had a pretty massive recall/ motor replacement program. Be wary and do the homework
