You have two choices using a mig welder depending on whether you have two thicknesses of metal or one. If you have two thicknesses and only one has a hole cut out of it, you can center your mig wire on the lower metal and just plug weld the hole to the lower surface. If you're trying to fill a hole on one or more thicknesses of metal where the hole goes thru. then you'll need a copper backing plate to do the same thing. Eastwood (www.eastwood.com) sells these with a handle. The copper will act as a backstop for the weld and the weld won't stick to it. They also introduced a kit with the copper plate and a special mig tip that acts like a stand so you can spot weld using a mig. Their latest catalog spotlites spot welding and using a mig to weld sticks to pull sheet metal with. Their catalogs are usually free. Hope this helps.
