I started this just as a silly topic for members to share their experiences about their job.

Cool.....let's just all settle down a bit now and let the dust settle.

Tuesday morning here, and I have made one run out to the Quarry I look after, and am going out again soon.

Sad news this morning was one of the contractor engineers passed away on Friday....just after he arrived back at their shop. Said he wasn't feeling too well, then just collapsed. The guys tried to revive him without success. This guy was the one with most of the mechanical knowledge locked inside his head.....a huge loss in more ways than one. R.I.P. Dave.

The last three weeks I've been helping out a friend. I wake up when I want, go to bed when I want and work at a comfortable pace. It sure beats the LONG commutes I have done for years!

The longer the drive, the less I want to work no matter how fun the job is.
I have clearly noticed that when I have local work, I lack the common anxiety on Sunday nights before the workweek starts. When I am working 60, 70 or 100 miles away, I have a hard time relaxing on Sunday because I dread the thought of the long week ahead.

I get that.--My last long job was a 150mile round trip to home. I recall the first day as I pulled in thinking about the coming commute times added to 12 hour days at the job.
That job lasted 45days straight (sat.and sun. included).
I made a lot of money on that job but will NOT do that again.

I checked in with my old boss to see if they had anything coming up. He responded with "No, nothing coming up. Not sure what or when. Check with the Union, Hope they can help. Good luck and if anything changes, we will definitely check in with you. Thanks for the insane, killer work you did for us."
The last part has me curious. It seems like a send off, not on par with a "We see you in our future" sort of sentiment.

A "send off" in the construction business is an inevitable part of the business. The old boss you refer to is out of the same job you were out of. Most likely he is seeking his next job as you are. BTW in the last 40+ years working in the construction business I have been "sent off" on EVERY job. The end of a job has always been a kind of celebration or realise for availability for the next one. Cheers for being clear and ready for your next employer.

Yeah, I am accustomed to periods of unemployment. Since 1988, this company has been my "Home Base". I go off elsewhere when they don't have work so I'll do that again. I just like working for them.
