At car shows I have seen plenty of people cover up the VIN and even remove the fender tag. One guy I spoke to at a recent car show said people are recording VIN's for the purpose of cloning cars but I can't verify this. OK, so what can you do with a VIN?
I know first hand that I was able to find a car I once owned but giving someone with access to this sort of info the VIN of the car. In short order I got the complete address. I of course had no ill intent and I never even drove by the house. My main objective was to see if it was still in the system.
If someone wanted to fake a HEMI car all they would have to do is add the 5th digit, some fender tag info, a few braces here and there and a good story as to why the important parts are missing. You can even buy the rosette rivets! Graphic artists are reproducing stickers that are dead on so in this world of CNC machining and CMM measuring why can't someone reproduce a set of VIN stamps?
The cars are getting harder to find in one piece but at least for now the demand is high, especially for many Europeans who are taking advantage of the low prices. Not saying it's a slam dunk but if you're going to sell a clone car seems to me outside of the US would be a good target. When it comes to MoPars many car people jumped on the bandwagon once MoPars became expensive (hence my signature line) and it might be safe to say a lot of these people don't have the experience or the trained eye to spot the details. Sure you can read about all the info, but nothing can replace 20-40 yrs of actually fondling car after car back when no one gave a crap about them. In the 80's I didn't have to look much farther than a badge to tell if I was buying a real 383 Road Runner for $500.00 - $2000.00.
As many have stated, I too don't mean any disrespect to the OP, but I'm not handing the VIN of my cars over to someone unless they have some official documentation stating they are legally allowed to do this type of research. Ford people have the "Marti report" and they are licensed by Ford
http://www.martiauto.com/reports2.cfm so how can I believe that another car person like me has access to this kind of info? I'm sorry, but until I see more evidence of some official business I must call.....
