Retired, prior to retirement I worked 4 10s. By the end of the week I was exhausted. Nice having 3 day weekends but rough Monday thru Thursday
How do you survive without a full paycheck coming in? The way things are going in this country, I don’t think I will ever be able to afford to retire. I would like to keep busy but am getting burned out on the weekly routine but thankful I have a job as well. If I retired before 70 I think I will be on the street within 3 years when the money runs out. Can’t survive on Social security and 401k.Retired at 58 but used to work 80 hr weeks - and typically 7 days a week. Burned out then bailed out. Non too soon either. One heart attack - would have had another I’m sure if I didn’t retire. Best thing I’ve ever done.
I planned carefully for this over the years. 33 years in the insurance business. Took a lot of investment risks pretty much my whole life. Did okay. Paid off my house 15 years ago - have zero debt. I’ve always kept my expenses low but still always did what I wanted to do. My wife is an RN with 10 years experience. In CA that means six figures and top drawer benefits. I could do it with or without her income because as stated I pretty much knew I couldn’t do what I was doing and last to 65 so I started mapping things out a long time ago. It takes a well planned road map my friend but can be done. I wish you well and it’s never to late to take action. How do you survive without a full paycheck coming in? Thanks for the details. I too have planned and saved since my mid 20’s. Zero debt. Drive a beater ‘88 Honda and a 2000 Honda 14 yrs prior so I can pay cash to maintain the mopar. Now 48 and also living in bleed me dry California where I was born and raised. My problem is I lost the house during the recession so way behind on a house to live in and still renting even though I earn 6 figures. I don’t even have kids and see no end to work in sight. I hear many stories from older friends of working 5 more years than planned because once they hit 65-70 a recession hit just as their 401k took a nose dive. If I had to do it again I would work in the trades with a pension and buy small properties earlier in life.I planned carefully for this over the years. 33 years in the insurance business. So did I but if I had known a divorce was in my future, I never would have retired. Anyways, tried to keep my stress levels down by working the off shift like evenings and did that for many years. Days off varied in most cases and at my request. We also had a weekend shift which entailed working 8 hours on Friday evening then 16 on Saturday and Sunday and then off until the following Friday and did that for 5 years. Knew things were getting crappy on days since there were people that had more seniority than me signing up for it and I had been there for over 15 years at the time. Getting away from the BS was my main goal plus the extra pay didn't hurt. The company finally killed off everything except days and went to a 10 hour work day. That's when I bid out of the shop and into the field for my last year there....and before I killed one of the stoopidvisors what was a royal pos. Turns out he got booted from the shop and placed into a position where he was more or less just a paper pusher.Zero.
I had enough and retired...
As you well know owning a property in CA is a big deal. Prices and taxes are out of sight and now you can’t write much off anymore. I feel your concern but you’re still young and if you stay on the path you’re on I think you’ll be fine. Many/most of this that work beyond 65-70 are doing so because they didn’t make the sacrifices earlier in life like you are. Either that or are helping out children who need their support. I have a feeling you’ll be okay. Stay true to your plan and invest. Thanks for the details. I too have planned and saved since my mid 20’s. Zero debt.
