working on my 74 440 with thermonquad, have idle seleniod on (R) side, bolts on carb, says set idle with this sel, I know it plugs up somewhere, but can't find plug, only plug I have hagining there should be for my air, shouldn\'t this selenoid have 12 constant volts?

I can think of two uses. First would relate to a six pack. They had an idle solenoid and you set the idle using it. It had constant power while the key was on. Turn the key off, solenoid drops out, carb closes off helping to eliminate "dieseling".

The second would be a fast idle for the A/C. When the compressor is running, the solenoid is energized bumping the idle up a bit to compensate for the extra load. A/C off, solenoid drops out.

Ok I have only one wire hanging there that does not get hot untill I turn the air on, which should be correct, At present time I could not get idle from car, this is the correct thermoquad for the 74 440, which says it has this idle selnoid, Right now I hook it from battery, set idle with it,(selenoid) corrected timing, and can also slow idle down now off of carb idle screw on left side, with out this selinod constantly on, I can get no idle, this carb has been rebuilt and gone over several times, with no fuel leaks or vacumn leaks, has had all linkages set, by the book, along with metering, runs excellent, my problems is with idle. I am just trying to find out if I need to peel back my wiring harness and see if there is a wire that has been cut off, that should feed contant voltage to this seleniod with ign. on.

I doubt it was made to ONLY idle at the correct speed with the solenoid energized. Something isn't right with your carb

Gotit figured out, carb has wrong top on it, and put correct jets and rods in it, now works great, I know that the selonoid is just for a/c
