Well, if it's erratic in the start, or cranking position, that should be obvious in that the start relay may not work reliably. In the run position, its possible that there may be some resistance in the contacts that can lead to internal heating within the switch and ignition problems. New ones are readily available on E bay for about $ 25-35 buck range. If you have doubts, just replace it. It's easy to do.. The key cylinder is held in by a spring loaded pin you depress to remove. You can transfer your existing lock cylinder into the new switch.
I recently removed mine and removed the lock cylinder. Flushed it out with DeOxIt and large streams of graphite gunk blew out. Previous owner blew lots of graphite spray into all of the locks and key cylinders.
Resistance on the bench measured less than 2 ohms in run and start.
