Looking to buy an msd adjustable timing control to squeeze for mileage. Live in Florida but travel to about 10 to 12 thousand feet for extended periods. When in the mountains do I need to advance or retard timing or just do a primary jet change?

I would advance and go down on jet, maybe 2 sizes to start. They used to say pinging is the sound of economy. Those MSD dial adjusters are good but you need the interface module also. On my old 70 Charger 383 Magnum auto I had 2 carbs for trips. A 600 Holley with a Weber plate that you could change jets externally and a 3310 750 jetted for Powa. Used to drag down 17-18 with the 600.

So, as far as timing is concerned, I would be looking at advancing the timing with the Leaner mixture rather than retarding?

That is where I would start. With that dial back you can advance at a steady Flat cruise and retard when pulling and the ping starts. You are going to have to play with it. Too much timing with a lean mix aint good. Small steps.
