Make the seller throw out the first number. Never offer until you've looked it over. If he won't let you look, adios.

If he is asking for top dollar, which I think he is, they need to get the car out where you can determine its value. If not, then you have to assume that everything you can't see needs repair, and your offer should reflect that. I see this all the time, where people want top dollar, but won't take the cover off the car.

The days are long gone where you had to determine the price you should ask for a car by asking around and word of mouth. Anyone today can just look it up. They know what the cars go for, they checked.

Just to clear things up, @moparhoosier said the asking price was 27K. Honestly, I think it's a decent starting price from a seller's point of view. You know how it is trying to sell a car, most people will try to get you to come off a few thousand right off the bat.

I would not buy that car for a teenage son, or daughter. Teenagers are at different levels of irresponsibility, not different levels of responsibility.

I am looking for some opinions. I looked at a 69 charger over the weekend. The guy selling it claims he is selling it for his dad who is much older. He claims his dad traded a chevelle for it years ago and was going to finish the car but never did due to health. His dad did come out and walked poorly. Spoke very politely though. The car was stored in a building by a business who does Dyno's etc. and I got the impression the business was wanting the car out of the warehouse. I dont know if they were going to do some work on the car and never did or what. Anyway, the body looked straight, the seats were new, the headliner was new but not a perfect job. The dash and console were original and worn but not beyond salvageable. The rear dash had 4 speakers cut into it. It had american racing rims on that were older. Trunk was original and showed it. The car was packed in so tight with about 10 other cars around it that I couldnt even get under the car to see it other than I could tell it was undercoated. Engine compartment was so/so. Not great but no where near presentable. Car had the original 383. Surprisingly, with some gas in the carb., it started right up. Hoses were aging. Guy had a new gas tank in the box for it along with a new set of headers in a box as well. Overall, best I could tell it looked straight but again, in a light restricted warehouse crammed in amongst other cars. Original color was white but now Dukes of hazzard orange. Couldnt get in the car to see what works and what didnt, nor was it able to be driven considering it was packed in. The guys son said he wanted to sell it as is. There were no paint issues I could tell on the outside but again it was covered in dust. I noticed some areas in the engine compartment had orange paint flaking. Im not naive, I realize the car is what it is. I thought about buying the car as a project for my son but I honestly have no place to store it right now. What I want to know is what is a 69 charger worth in this described condition? I have seen some fairly high prices (at least what I thought were high) even for 69 donor cars but honestly have no idea what to offer. What I was trying to determine is what I should pay so I couldnt get hurt even if there were issues I couldnt see like a rear end or lots of interior mechanicals etc. I definitely know there is an issue with the back window. I could see where someone tried to silicone around the molding. The car is no where near presentable but it appears to be driveable. Anyway, any opinions what someone thinks it would be worth? I know some are going to say where are the pics and I dont have any. The lighting sucked and it was packed with cars I couldnt have gotten a decent shot anyway. Just assume the condition I explained or worse regarding your thoughts. I appreciate any opinions.

UPDATE ON CAR
Soooo... I went back and got a lot better look at the car. Overall fairly straight. Has replacement 1/4's best I can tell. Car started right up. After running a few minutes the gas line and filter started leaking fuel. No big deal to fix. Had Nitto tires on it. Older American racing aluminum rims on it. Car drove OK but lacking power. Had a vibration from the engine compartment but dont think it was the engine. Sounded like there was some sort of a vibration. Again, I dont think it was a big deal either. Rear end seemed OK. Definitely issues with the back window. No obvious rust anywhere but car was completely undercoated. Didnt find any obvious weak or corroded areas underneath. Interior, mostly wore out except for seats which were fairly knew. In comparison the the 69 green charger posted for comparison purposes, I would this body and paint were nicer but this interior was in worse shape than the green one. So, I offered the guy 18k. He flat turned it down and said he had 2 offers in the mid 20's and declined those. I have no clue if thats true or not but he clearly would not accept 20k. He claims he started at 30 and has come down to 27 and thats where he is staying. The idea was for a project car for my son who is 26. Again, it seemed like a high price to me considering the amount of money it will take to get it to a nice presentable stage. For that kind of money I told my son he could pick out some really nice other cars or trucks in way nicer condition for the same amount of money or less. I realize Chargers are going up and up but just another reason for him to find something more affordable especially when it comes to parts.

At $27k you will have $45k in it before your done. I found a '70 Super Bee close to me, been sitting for 23 years...outside. Car has all of its stuff, its just trashed after all the years in sun, rain, hail, snow. Had several rust holes below rear window, a few dents. The guy was firm at $12k, wouldn't budge. Body work and paint were going to be an easy $15k. Add in the rest of the work needed and I'd be in the same cost range as you. The fact is, when you have to buy parts for the B-Body cars, they're not cheap. If you can do the mechanical, electrical, and body work, then you can save a good amount. Keep looking, something reasonable will become available.

27k is to steep for a car in the condition you describe unless it is a low build model (six pack, hemi etc)

Do yourself a favor, and just look around for a nice workable project for a decent price, even if it's not a Mopar. I've dealt with these delusional people in the past, some still have their cars to this day.

That's what everyone was saying when the car was 10k cheaper.

You can sit on the sidelines and bitch or you can jump in and have some fun. How deep of water you want to jump into is up to you.
