info about disc brake conversion for the 67

Did you know that you can take the disc brakes off of a 1986 5th avenue and it bolts right up. much better braking than the oe drum. Im all for origanal BUT drums are not dependable.

I was recently in the same boat as everyone else i wanted to change from drum front brakes to disc. I went to the junk yard and found a 1986 chrysler 5th avenue wich is 11 inch brakes and same lug pattern 5 on 4 1/2. the spindle bolts right up using the 67 factory ball joints and bolts. I also perfer using his model because the brake caliper and brake line is all on the back side of the wheel. Everything bolts right on doesnt enterfear with anything including the front sway bar. plenty of clearence!! Disc brakes are affordable now!! Note this will be a single piston caliper wich cost 14 each and the rotors were only 43 each and i spent 75 for the spindles with caliper braket. oh and use the rubber brake line also from the 86 5th avenue its only 6 each it will connect to the factory hard line and has plenty of turning slack.
 
Nice! My neighbour has a mint 86 5th ave next door...wonder if he'd miss the front brakes. I recall hearing of this somewhere else. Do you have any pic's?

This kind of swap is common. I took the brakes off a 74 Dart and put them on my 70 Road Runner eight years ago. Mopar Muscle did an article on this about the same time, I bet the other magazines did too. Any later A, B, F, or M body spindle with disk brakes is a bolt-on. Change out the hoses and master cylinder and you are good to go.
 
I'm excited...my neighbour wasn't fond of me creepin' around his garage last night...I'll try Pick n Pull today, lol. So while we are scavenging for braking components, what about an appropriate master/proportioning valve?

if you have power brakes then you can use your original master cylinder. but you will need to pull the porportion valve off the donar car. the brake calipers require more brake fluid pressure than old school drums.
 
My Belvy likely had manual master/drums. My first thought is the master from the donor car should work with the calipers/rotors, but will the brake pedal geometry be correct. I'll do some investigating today...back to the neighbours garage.
 
your better off buying the master cylinder for power brakes for the 67 model but you will need a power booster and the backing plate and the adjusable rod. you might wanta just pull these items off of another donar car close to the same year model as yours that way its a direct fit.

Wow and thanks to this forum for the info on disc brake conversion especially gtx67. I went to the local Craigs list and bought a complete k member from a 76 Volare and got all the parts necessary for the replacement of spindles rotors and calipers. I got lucky the calipers are the good quality with lots of meat on them. I haven't yet tackled the brake booster and master cylinder as the booster from the Volare is too large circumference and the linkage looks wrong. But aside from that the front end took a little over two hours and would have been less had I remembered that in my tool bin was a Portapower and with the different attachments whichthen I was able to separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle . Anyhow thanks and 76 Volares work great for the swap and I should mention was 100.00 and they're giving me 30.00 of that back if I want to return for the booster and cylinder. The booster and brake cylinder are available rebuilt from the local parts store and may do that. I am doing the plumbing while the engine is out as it makes access great. Thanks to this forum Paul

Just curious, but are the spindles taller than the OE B body? And if so I read in the MA article that it's problematic to use the tall spindles on the early B bodies because you can't get the front end aligned properly. If anyone has other info on this please post.
 
No they are the same height. And even if that were true itwould not effect setting the front end alignment you still have plenty of travel for your caster and camber
 
I dont know if i posted the rest of the story. But as of Last week I picked up a Master cylinder and booster from a 70 duster that had disc brakes. I thijnk all thats left is some new plumbing and it should be good to go. I am planning on pulling the poly which is from Chryslers direct Connection program and detail both it and the engine bay. At that time I will do the final install of the brakw system.
 
So what ever happened here.....? Thread died, but a lot of good info to be posted. What's the verdict on the spindle height of the F/M cars? Anyone had good luck, bad luck, etc? Trying to help my dad put disc's on the front of his '66, but those A-body spindles are almost impossible to find, for a decent price anyway.
