I'm working to refurbish the interior skeleton and trunk in my '63 Fury. I've spent hours on prepping it removing old tar coating. What a job and only have left quarter near prep for coating so far! I have some areas in the section prepped that are appreciably surface rusted and clean sections of metal. After some hours of web surfing have come across some products that look good to use: base primer coat of Rustoleum Metal Primer; but treating only the rusty areas with Extend first. Extend says don't use this on clean metal or apply a non-oil base coat over it...thus the Rustoleum pick. After this looking to apply a sound/waterproofing overcoat coming across two interesting products 1) Acoust-X and 2) MacMaster-Carr Rubber coat #7873T4. Lizard Skin is popular but part of my selection is all coatings need to be brushed/rolled, on not sprayed, as I have to control where I apply it. Before I can finish this chore the car will be painted. Anyone use any of these primer or coating products; if so appreciate hearing your experience. Thanks.

I've not used any of those coatings. I have found that "Rust Mort" and similar products available at most auto parts stores that "react with rust" (not remove it) work very well as a first coat over your slightly rusty metal.

My primary dilemma is the use of oil and/or water coat based products as some of the rust inhibitors like Extend say not to overcoat with a water based coating. And calling a couple of outfits having sound/insulating proofing products, being water based, say not to apply over oil based primers/paints. Trying to find a reasonable method as seems that an oil-based product does better to protect metal and some water based products may not fully cure leaving some moisture in such case an oil-based coating would seem best. Problem with many varying opinions on this and inability to apply by spraying on...having to roller/brush apply.

In my opinion rolling it or brushing it shouldn't matter... the company wants a certain look and spraying it is how they get the look. rolling or brushing wouldn't look the same but should still cover. If you roll or brush the whole area it will all look the same. Rolling will have a different look then the brush. But if it is something no one will be seeing who cares what it looks like. ie covered by carpet or floor mats. I have sprayed lizard skin on Russtoy, my 69 charger. I sprayed it over por15 that was sprayed a few years ago. I did brush some spots that I didn't get covered well enough due to I am not a contorsionist. hahaha, It still stuck but doesn't have the same look.

Yeah- my main concern is protection of any rusty areas or where water could find its way and some sound proofing. My thought was to have it mostly a white coating since the car is white and original interior coating is white as well. I know exactly what you mean about being a contortionist and at my age after neck and back surgeries, this is a lot tougher than it used to be! Sort of amazed what I still get myself into...like this job!

Not so flexible here either, I have had very good results with por 15 and chassis saver for the rust prevention under coat, por 15 is a lot more aromatic ( it stinks more) then chassis saver. Both can be sprayed or brushed/rolled. results turn out the same nice smooth finish. What part of Wisconsin you in? I 'm Bemidji. MN When Russtoy is done, I am going to put some miles on him.
