I seen a block the other day and on the ID stamping pad was a Maltese cross with a X after it. From what i understand it refers to .010" undersized crank shaft. My question is why were some new engines assembled with ground crankshafts and some not? Were these past year factory warranty blocks and sent back for reconditioning and installed as a new motor?

Think it's right. Looking at one of the block stampings info pages, tell for sure.

Should mean crank undersize .010, on both mains and journals. Only guessing why, but always figured when the crank is ground to size, if it doesn't clean up...keep going until it does.

Forged crank in mine was under .010 at the mains only, and stamped on the crank itself, not the block pad.

Thats exactly right miller, they weren't about to throw away a perfectly good crank that just needed a little extra off the top. :icon_thumright:

And don't throw away a crank that needs to go .030 under. If you can get bearings for it, you can keep cutting. Look how much is taken off of a 440 crank to fit into a 400 block......
