How can I tell... there are no markings that say 727 that I can see.

Here are some pics of some numbers and front on ?

It has 24 splines on the input shaft ?

Any ideas.

According to your part number stamping (3681864), it is a '74 727 from a 2bbl 400 std performance

The way to tell small block from big block is twofold:
1) The case will have a large A or B on the bellhousing.
2) The starter bulge has a rib on the inside on the 727B. No rib on the 727A.

Exactly where would I see this A or B stamped on the bell housing ? I have been all over this thing.... Maybe if someone has a picture of its location.

Should be on the outside of the bellhousing somewhere. Note that it is NOT universal across all years. Some transmissions do not that that "A" or "B" marking at all. I've got two transmissions inside my shop, I'll see if either have the marking on them.
