Ok, I had an old 69 440 avs rebuilt and the mechanic said it wasn't possible to change it from a mechanical choke to electric choke. It currently has no choke. He said there's parts missing and it wont work, so he wired it open. One thing he told me was that he used afb metering rods. The originals were damaged. So I was looking for a parts carb and came across this on ebay:

We use to change them from "automatic" choke to a manual. That is using a cable that ran into the inside of the vehicle from the choke mechanism. It was an aftermarket kit that replaced the spring loaded unit with a leaver that the cable attached to. The one that you are showing from EBay has an automatic choke. Heat from the exhaust manifold heats the spring inside the adjustable housing and opens the choke as the engine warms up. There is a electric choke housing that looks just like the one in the pic but there is a connector for a wire. (newer version) They can be adapted but you have to use a wire that has current only when the engine is running. Not just when the ignition is on. It all depends on what you want and yes you do have to have the right parts that was with your original carb. I don't know if the metering rods are interchangable.

yeah, idk much about carb's. Basic knowledge. Thats why I took it to a guy thats supposed to know carbs. I've read that they don't interchange. He said he swapped them with a afb he had as a spare. Although I couldn't get the car running to see if it would run. Guess I should've looked closer and seen that tube and not a terminal.

I need to correct myself, the tube from the choke goes into a hole in the intake manifold, not the exhaust. The hole is on the same side as the choke and goes into the "crossover" that is molded inside the intake.
The original setup works just fine, as long as the spring is in good shape and the tube and crossover are not clogged up. The choke needs to be adjusted when the engine is dead cold. Like letting is sit overnight before adjusting.
Now my '62 has a spring that is mounted in an opening in the intake, not on the carb. They were always trying to improve on these...

As long as you use the flat top covers as opposed to the domed covers, AFB metering rods can be used in a AVS. It also looks like somebody added the choke thermostat from a GM to that carb and modified the throttle lever.

Im not buying that carb. Just raised a question in my mind. "Is it possible to retro fit an electric choke to an old carter avs?" I don't know the differences between the Edlbrock avs's and the carters.

i dont think the old avs carbs have the holes for the electric choke kits to bolt to.look at a pick of an edelbrock carb and you will see the holes i am talking about and then see if your carb has them.(non elec choke carb to see holes)

heres what i have
if you look there is a small arm that stick forward just above the choke pull off diaphram.it has a small dimple in it that would need to be one of several holes to mount the elec choke kit.

Your manifold has the indentation for a choke spring assembly as does mine. Follow the linkage from the choke shaft...

You gotta be kiddin me. He can get a reman Edelbrock 750 with electric choke from Summit for 269.

It mite be worth that if I had a 69 numbers matching 440 and needed a carb. Hell I got almost that tied up in mine and it was a big waste of time. But I could've had a better carb and miles ahead. Lesson learned I suppose. I was under the initial impression that rebuilding old carbs was the way to go. Maybe in some circumstances, but not with my luck...

What about those remand thermo quads rusty? I seen they have them now in the summit catalog.

I haven't tried one, or heard anything about them, but they look good and I'm sure they have a decent warranty if you run into trouble.

theres 3 kinds of chokes....

1.Manual choke.....works off a steel cable that goes in the car for you to operate the choke butterfly
2.Automatic choke.....works with a bi-metal spring and gets heat source from a crossover in the intake manifold to open the choke butterfly
3.Electric choke...also works with a bi-metal spring and electricity that warms the spring and opens the choke butterfly

THE RAT is right, you can get a rebuilt one for 249.00 with an electric choke.

But is it a 4640 SA with a 69 date code? Not that it matters for the OP but some of these things are big bucks!
