Was unpleasantly surprised to open up my new rod bearings and find some funky defects. I consulted the local speed shop and his opinion was that it wouldn't hurt anything.
Well, I couldn't stomach putting these rod bearings in my nice new engine.

Makes me wonder about Clevite quality control....

This is another one, similar defect.

Four out of the eight were fine, the other half had varying degrees of this defect. This is the lower shell on a Clevite H series for 440.
The bearing on the right is a King HP Series, for the same engine.
I know my next build will not have Clevites in it. This is the 2nd issue in the last year I have had issues with Clevites.
Just putting this out there so everyone can be vigilant, not to bash a USA made product.
Summit gladly exchanged the "dirty" H Series bearings for a set of the King HP's . Once again, great customer service from the people of Summit.

looks like the slippery coating many bearings have now. wipe hard w/ clean oily rag and use them .

My new builder was not positive on recent Clevite bearings. I used them all the time 35 years ago, but things have changed.

Anyone heared from Clevite on the issue. New bearings missing surface facing do not look good.

Looks like something went wrong during the tanging process to put that mark in the bearing. I wouldn't use them either. They shouldn't have ever left the factory.

Having said all that, Summit isn't a very good place to buy bearings.

I ordered some Clevite X bearings from them once in a pinch. Inside the box was one half X and one half std because some clown ordered both sets to mix and match for clearance reasons, boxed up the leftovers, and got a return number. The guys at Summit probably never opened a box, just restocked them on the shelf.
The defect could have been done by someone else and then returned to Summit.
