Concussions: What to Do After

Although most people recover fully within 10 days after a concussion, how quickly you improve depends very much on how well you take care of yourself after the injury.
Duke neurologist Joel Morgenlander, MD, offers these helpful tips to follow after a concussion -- whether you’re a child or an adult:
  • Get plenty of sleep at night, and rest during the day. Keep a regular schedule -- no late nights, no sleepovers for kids.
  • Initially, avoid activities that are physically demanding, require a lot of concentration, or are mentally or emotionally stressful.
  • Avoid multitasking -- whether that’s watching TV while fixing dinner or fielding multiple messages on your smart phone.
  • Your reaction times may be slower, so ask your doctor when you can safely drive a car, ride a bike, or operate major equipment.
  • Consider returning to work or school gradually -- start with half-days if possible.
  • Treat pain with acetaminophen only, unless other pain relievers are approved by your medical provider.
  • Adults: no alcohol.
  • Kids: no video games.

After Your Concussion

It’s a good idea to let employers, teachers, coaches, and family members know what’s happened, so they can help you deal with any challenges that arise, whether it’s patience with mild forgetfulness or accommodating the need for frequent rest breaks.
Mental and physical rest is very important. In today’s multitasking world, true rest can be a true challenge, but it’s essential to the brain’s recovery.

All in the Game

You don’t have to lose consciousness to have a concussion. If a concussion is sports-related, the injured player should always be evaluated by a health professional.
After a concussion, you should stay off the field -- don’t even practice -- until you are cleared to return to play.
This would have been a handy piece of imfo to know after my last concussion.

Holy **** Greg. Im glad it wasn't worse...and it easily could have been. Glad you are getting better day by day. Don't over-exert yourself and do **** too soon. You are going need time to heal properly or it the injuries will linger for a long time.

Thought of a song for you (and really the rest of us on this board lol)

I haven't seem this video before, and I laughed my *** off - great video!

KD, glad you will mend up. Not sure I can add to what everyone else has said. I know I am also still bullheaded about doing stuff myself. But I did just agree to let contractors put a new roof on my house. I still like to believe I can do anything I put my mind to, but I certainly can't do everything. And now, there are some things that are dumb for me to do (or try). The roof, for me, is one of those things. Trying to lug up 1000's of pounds of singles will probably damn near kill me.

Follow doctor's orders, don't be bullheaded and heal up quickly (and well)!

Two friend went down 20 ft Heard a noise behind me turn and saw guy hit *** first the other was on side who "OK" wind knocked out. Other guy a friends against what I said moved him. Turned badly cracked vertebrae, fortunately didn't hurt him. Hospital two weeks 2 months body cast. In the hospital his roommate was a quadriplegic. He sat in a lawn on a deck 3 ft. off the ground and went over the edge broke his neck. His smoking hot wife was there......You were very lucky.

Dang lucky Kern. Glad your on the mend. About 5 weeks ago my Dad fell 5' off his new deck and landed on a 2x4. Broke 6 ribs, scapula and his collar bone, punctured a lung. My brother and I put him on a piece of plywood in the back of my megacab and took him to e.r..Then he was lifeflighted to a bigger hospital. Been hard on him, but he has 20 years on you. There is a lot going on in the shoulder and can be pretty painful. So hopefully you have a speedy recovery.

Glad to hear your better brother! At this point I have to be careful on the 6 foot ladder cleaning the gutters. :)

Sorry Greg for your miss fortune, I’m glad to hear you’re on the mend. Too bad I’m not closer or have some free time, I’d help you.

Man, I do wish that I had someone to work on these cars with.
Most of the guys that I know are either too broke or have lost interest in cars. It sucks.
One friend of mine likes cars but has developed some health issues that make it hard for him to stay active. I've known the guy since I was in high school and it pains me to see him struggle.
From 2010 to 2013, my brother in law lived here in town. We worked on this together:

He lost interest and moved away, I ended up buying the car from him. I'll finish and sell it and bank the proceeds.

Move down here. I'm in the same boat since there are not any gear heads of our caliber around that I've found so far. I miss my neighbor John from Ramona. Old time rodder, Viet Nam vet[ 82nd Airborne, was an M60 gunner doing LRRP's], contractor, airline mechanic, car show enthusiast.

Sorry to hear! Glad you’re mending! I came off a ladder about 12 feet couple years ago.. Elbow surgery was my only thing! I did learn its not the fall that gets us it that sudden stop! Age doesn’t help!

I didn’t get to every post here but do keep us posted on your recovery!

good you're on the mend get well or better soon

Hey, a broken shoulder blade and a concussion are no reasons to stop posting. Kidding. You are one of the good members so I hope you get well soon.

I figured you were busy doing the bodywork and paint on Jigsaw! I was expecting photos of a sparkling B5 blue metallic 70 Charger!

Glad to hear it wasn't worse, Greg. When you feel down about being laid up, think about all the ways it could have been so much worse. Take your time getting healed up.

Other than my sore shoulder, I feel pretty close to normal today. My back and waist are down to near zero pain. I haven't had any neck or head aches. As before, the knees are fine. I didn't hurt my face or hair so I am thankful for that.

I can't stand to wear a sling! It feels so restricting and limiting even though it fits correctly. Mary was pissed that I quit wearing it. I'm keeping my arm close to my core when I walk. I did wear the sling while we were out for lunch today.
I feel blessed with the luck that I have had in my life. I've encountered some setbacks over the years but have also seen numerous instances where luck and fortune have seemed to intervene. We have all known people that seem to fall face first into crap at every turn no matter what they do. Somehow, I am almost the opposite of that. Most times, I avert injury or major problems as if a guiding force were protecting me. I know you may dismiss the thought and may think I'm heavily medicated but I've thought this for years. Luck often shines on me. Troubles that plague some people just have not happened to me despite no outstanding efforts on my part to ensure it.
You'd have to have spent time around me to know the numerous examples of great luck that I have encountered over the years.
This is another one of them.
I don't know any of the specifics to my fall from the roof. I remember none of it. My injuries suggest that I landed on my feet and bounced backwards onto my back but there were no witnesses. Unless the NSA has targeted me for political comments, there is no video of the fall.
Knowing that, somehow I fell and avoided a head first landing which absolutely could have killed me.
It has been barely a week and aside from the shoulder, I'm doing well. I am thankful for a lot.

In the multiverse there are worlds where you sustained every type of, and combination of, injury including death.

Well, that is a whole lot deeper than I intended to go but it is possible.
It isn't as if I am a lucky gambler and walk away from every casino with bags of cash.
I don't tempt fate with blatantly foolish behavior just to see what happens either.
I just seem to land shiny side up in many situations that just as easily could have been the end of me.
I have a buddy that seems to land in crap far more than average. He really does seem to be a person struggling most of the time just to stay afloat.
On the other hand, I've found problems that could have been huge failures (Causing at the least, inconvenience and at the worst death) just in time to fix them. I've stumbled onto money that I needed right as I needed it. I've come up with ideas or solutions for situations out of the blue and just in time.
In terms of injuries like this....I have had countless near-falls in 36 years of construction that didn't happen due to stepping a few inches to one side or the other.
Who knows. Maybe I'm normal in this sense but I've heard nobody else speak out loud about their luck like this before.

I have cheated death so many times I'm constantly surprised to still be alive. lol.

Kern,
I feel your pain Sir. I was 16' up in a tree stand when the support braces broke. I don't remember the fall, the landing, the waking up, the crawling for 1/2 a mile in the woods to get cel signal, the call I placed to the in-laws for help, the wife showing up at her parent's house, the ride in the ambulance to the first hospital, the ride in the ambulance to the second hospital, or all the x-rays and other scans. That was over 7 years ago and I still have just a bank canvas of those events. About 10 hours are just clear film. Several of the Doctors say I will never recall the events and I probably would not want to. I too was "lucky" to avoid serious injury (only messed up my balance for a month or so). That time would have been shorter if they knew what caused the vertigo sooner. The treatment for that was only about a week. Some "stone like things" in your ears that give you your sense of balance. Anyway, a friend of a friend took a similar fall (but from a shorter distance) and he is still not back to normal some 8 years later. His arm is messed up and he can't draw a bow back anymore. His back still hurts as does his pelvic area.
I have no idea if someone is watching over me or not, but if that is the case I really hope they don't blink, as I get myself into trouble pretty quickly.

PS. So glad to hear you are on the mend!
