Sounds great and I like the valve covers ... can you post a better shot of what you have on them? Looks like crossed flags and 440

I'll try to get you a better pic this weekend. Has two flags then 440 then two more flags and says magnum under it. I got the valve covers and matching air cleaner off eBay. They are just some el-cheapos that I thought looked neat

Here is a link to the same set I bought. I swore I got them cheaper but that was a few years ago

those thin chrome valve covers like that always leak

Well I finally got some time to start wrenching again, decided to install my new rack and pinion conversion today. This turned out to be one of those all day jobs that didn't get finished. First off there is no way to get the old gear box out without dropping the exhaust loosening the header, removing the starter then removing the header. Pain in the rear! So once that was out I had to reinstall header and starter and I tried and tried but couldn't get this rack to bolt up, realized it was hittin a header tube so pull the starter and header back off and use a hammer to crush the header tube for clearance (did this twice) still not enough clearance so I cut that section of the header off. I was then able to bolt the rack up. after that I had to go to work modifying the steering column to bolt up to this rack parts were include to do this but not the quickest task either. So now here I sit rack is in and can steer car but I need to custom fab the header tube that got cut so ill have to figure out something for that and I still need to install the new pump. It was a long day full of colorful language. And on top of all this the tie rods look to be at a relatively extreme angle.

Instructions claim bolts right up with stock manifolds or tti headers obviously not summit headers.

Next weekend I've got a wedding to go to saturday and not sure what ill work on sunday

Funny, those two lines always go together....lol Well hey, at least you're out wrenching on your GTX and moving forward. Hopefully it goes a little more smooth moving forward. Would love to see some pic's of that conversion if you ever happen to snap a pic or two.

sounds like a fun day with the column, exhaust, starter, header & rack, I put a Unisteer rack & pinion in my 68 RR too, I don't know if I would recommend doing to anyone, I like the way the car handles, exhaust headers are very limited, the TTI 383178c are the only bolt on headers that will fit with out doing modification or customizing... I'm actually building a set of rear exit custom headers with a Flowmaster Scavenger type 1-7/8"4-2-1 3" collectors, I had the HP Manifolds with 3" Flowmaster exhaust head pipes from another car I sold, I put them on the car they fit fine, for now, so I could drive the car until I finish other things & finally build the headers, but either set of 1-7/8" or 2" race headers I had, would NOT work with the Unisteer rack & pinion, so I will modify the 1-7/8" to exit in the rear, with plenty of spark plug, valve cover/rocker adjustment & rack or starter clearances, kind of like the old S/S Iron Headers on the 62-65 B-Body 413-426 Max wedge the pipes/headers will go up then back & exit down by/along the firewall into a Y/cut-out, then into my existing 3" Flowmaster exhaust system... good luck

I had a wedding to attend Saturday and was hungover for a good part of Sunday so I didn't get a lot done. I decided to tackle my exhaust system. My father had a set of hooker comp headers laying around so we decided to see how they fit with my rack, they weren't any better. For now until I can afford a better option I bought a piece of flex pipe and welded it on. Once that was together I put the steering system, the header, and the starter all back on the car. I then started to install my summit brand exhaust kit and of course it took a bit of modifications as well. I didn't want to use the 30 clamps it came with so I welded it together. I ran out of time so I didn't get my chrome tips welded on or my hangers installed yet. Since exhaust isn't done I didn't take pics but I tried gettin some of the rack and pinion for you guys

Been a lot of delays and limited funds from family increases and other expensive hobbies. Car finally made it on the road 2 summers ago. Now has different wheels and mini tubbed along with sniper efi system and a new fuel tank

In your earlier replies, you feared a period more than a middle aged woman. Lol. Glad you found them on the phone.
Car looks great, OMG, I'm glad you tucked those tires under it and let it down some. What happened to the dana in this car? Or was it an auto from the factory?
Glad you kept at it.

The car was an automatic from the factory. A previous owner somewhere along the line converted it to a manual. They welded in the shifter hump.

Looks like they did a decent job. Car is really nice.
