While having some work done on my 66 Hemi Coronet, the shop owner asked if I'd be interested in a 426 that his brother had stored/owned for 50 years. Of course I said yes and went to look at it. A pretty amazing find. Complete Stage 3 engine, carbs to pan. Perfect condition with all the right numbers. It had been machined and balanced by keith Black years ago and was just waiting to be reassembled. The owner had built a few Max Wedge cars and this engine was going into his new car. You know the story, married, had kids and life just kind of left racing behind. he had never wanted to sell, but when his brother called him out of the blue, he reluctantly agreed to sell.
This package really is a time capsule, included a sure grip/diff assembly and fenderwell headers as well. While there, I also picked up an old four barrel manifold/carb and a factory 383 dual 4bbl manifold, too. Not sure if I should try and find an original engine less car or build a nice clone.

Nice score, how about some pics?

You have just made me Hate you ! :cussing: LOL! !!! Nice score for sure !!

What is the significance of the block being painted?

What is the significance of the block being painted?

Just a engine builder preference, from the 'old' racing days. I've done it on the last 4 motors I built.

Usually it's Rustoleum damp-proof red primer.

The idea is, starting with a clean block, after all machine work is done, you BRUSH on the primer, on any desired cast surfaces. The primer (besides giving some protection to the bare metal) creats a slicker surface, so when oil change time comes, instead of amounts of the oil soaking into the cast, it drains. Minor things about keeping the oil cleaner/cooler for longer periods of time.

One warning...if block-painting...needs full curing time. I give mine at least 3-4 days.

Thanks- that would be from Keith Black and its had 40 years to cure, so I guess its ready!

SWEET FIND !! That still proves some stuff is still out their for the finding !! Bet you got a pretty darn good price on it to !? O and that would look bitichin I a 64'-65' sattie or furry maybe with a resto mod touch !!

Heh...could be. Like I said, it's just a builder preference.

Any ideas what the bore sizes are?

Could have been just joking from an old drag car driver. The guy who built my rear gear set-up, only works on 62-65 drag cars, building them up.
Goes around the country hunting down any 426 wedges he can find. Pricy, just like 426 Hemis. On the blocks, asked him what the first thing he does to 'em...
Said he punches 'em out to 440. (Lol, no no)

I settled for my 440, since even if I found a wedge 426, I couldn't afford it. Man! You should have a blast with that thing. Some folks just fall into it.

That Hemi will be at Mopars at the Strip in a few days! I guarantee it will be the ugliest original Hemi car you've ever seen. Should run strong though!

I did just fall into it. I guess they figured anyone dumb enough to dump money into what looks like a rolling scrap heap(my Coronet) would be interested in some old motor too! Its cool that it still has the tags from keith Black on the crank and block.

You bet, guy!

Hat's off!!

I'm a Plymouth guy, but can't say anything. My 64 Ply is getting fitted with a 67 8 3/4 rear, 67 727, and a 69 440 mag, all out of Dodge Coronets! Does that mean I hafta stop bad-mouthing Dodges now??? Hehe. Still kinda ugly, ain't they.

Still curious on the bore, but only for the heck of it.

You made a fabulous find! (Almost feel my blood pumping a little better!)
Naw! Must be the Jack.

I'll check the bore-might be standard as the engine has been out of circulation so long it hasn't been screwed with.

here is a pic from two weeks ago of the Coronet-we've made a lot of progress since then!

Great looking start. Numbers car?

Gotta admit, just flat jealous (on the motors).

Yeah on the bore. Really hope it's not out of sorts for ya. But, I'll bet a buck you'll get it figured out. Keep that baby-doll alive, man...just for the rest of us poor slobs, okay?

Now...final offer...if you need a test ve-hick-al...got a 64. k??

Original Hemi went kaput decades ago. Car was ordered to street race(radio/heater delete) and painted mauve metallic with a white painted roof-supposedly one of one. I do have a nice 66 hemi that will eventually find its way back in. Trans and everything else is original but the 426 that has been dropped in is a newer one.
