I tried about everything I could think of but no luck. They are about three inches to long with the suspension at it's bottom position. Nothing in the instructions say's a thing about insulation. I even though they might be adjustable by turning by holding one assembly while holding the other but no luck, unless I didn't turn it far enough?

It does require some strength to compress to them.
I usually squat over them til they are fully compressed and then quickly install while they are opening.

Easiest way to compress a shock is to wrap one of these cheap ratchet straps around it.
Use the ratchet to tighten the strap, compressing the shock. Works slick, holds the shock compressed while you install it. Then just release the ratchet.
