I’ve heard noises like this at our lake, but not to this extent.

Sounds like the game "Space Invaders".
Our local lake does the same thing. The two acre pond on the home farm would do it to. We've been ice skating on it and cracking and that sound would make you think whether you should be on it.

I have heard a very similar noise - but it is usually from a highly tensioned fence wire...... but I can't see that being an issue in the boonies.
