Hey guys our lemons car is in need of an alternator. I know the stock one is a two groove unit that makes 60 amps. It is also for a 318. We are now running two electric fans on the car. Is there a late model unit that would swap in. Maybe something internally regulated and with more amps. There is no problem swapping in a reman unit but if there is another unit that could be swapped in for cheap or a junkyard unit that might be the way to go. Any common swaps off a later truck or car?

get an unexpensive 78-80 amps from any 80s stock mopar, be shure it got the smaller pulley and you are done. These are able to feed 45-48 amps iddiling, fairly enough for a stock car.

run wires from and to ammeter through firewall "bypassing" the existing ones ( no need to remove those if they are still in good conditions, paralllel to these is good ) and you'll find the difference still with stock system working like a champ.

BTDT on my driver car, with AC.

Trust me, no need mods or anything like many ppl will say ( cut and splice wires here and there, by pass ammeter etc... ) REALLY MY CAR IS A DRIVER!!! in the tropic, where I use allways the A/C. You can keep your car still wired and regulated like factory did, just a slight easy and unnoticeable upgrade.

with this upgrade the ammeter needle BARELLY WILL SENSE ANY charge or discharge reading. No read --> no load going through... no load ---> no heat which is the culprit of charging failures due the poor capacity of the stock earlier alts

What Nacho says! My alternator came from an 1985 truck. The brackets included the A/C compressor. It is higher than I would like but, it is much better than the original. I ran another set of wires through the firewall to the ammeter to keep all the amps from running through the wall. So far it is working well. The A/C system is newer and should give me the better performance.

Alt is a bit wider ( will fit a bit tight ) but still fits. I had to use longer belts ( maybe an inch or so ) to save the alt to hit the block on rear, buts that's because how the alt its installed on a BB on those years. I trimmed a bit the rear spacer too, for easier fitment.

Reason why alt is wider is because a wider stator assemblied in it. This is the reason the alt is more powerfull
