Look at this crud in my gas filter!

I have a 67 Dodge that doesn't get driven much. Went out for a cruise and picnic 25 miles from home last weekend. It did fine going, but started dying out and starving for fuel. Barely got it home. Checked the filter and found it stopped up. I decided to cut it open to see the innards. Wow! Today's crummy ethanol gas, and sitting a lot, make for a "muddy" gas filter...

Ah yes... the red crud. And by the way, that ain't the gas. I had my filter get clogged up with that crap twice. I opted to change the tank and when I pulled the sender unit it had rusted away to damn near nothing. The float was completely gone, there were holes rusted through the pipe, and the filter sock was as nasty as your filter. How the Hell gas was getting to the engine, I'll never know. And I ran a bore camera into the tank, and it looked just as bad.

Bad gas will look like a mix or orange juice and lemonade after a few years, but that red crud is rust.

Agreed that appears to be rust. You'll want to check your tank.

Gas laced with ethanol attracts plenty of moisture if you're using it, ....

I replaced the tank, sender, lines, filter and overhauled the carb on my 66. No issues for 10 years now.

Go to Puregas.org, enter your state to find cities and towns, and the stations listed that sell ethanol free gas. Best bets are near lakes, rivers,or at marinas.
I'm also an advocate of AV gas found at airports, small ones are usually more willing to sell. Make friends with them but most won't let you pull your car up on the runway haha
Here in Pa, the ethanol free is 91 octane and sells for about $1 more per gallon ($3.50).The AV gas at my local small airport is 100 octane leaded, $4.60 per.
But who cares - don't drive it that much.
I mix mine 2/3 - 1/3, and have had zero gas issues in over 5 years.

Whats the best source for a new tank? I see several online, and they seem to be much cheaper than tanks were when I needed one for another Mopar several years ago. Looks like they can be had for under a hundred at a few places.

Too late for me. I already replaced two original ones in the last few years.
So I bought some already.
But if I had it to do over again, they would be stainless.
I don't think it is much more.
And if they were, I would still do it.
Spectra maybe.

I ordered mine from Rock Auto. They had the best price. You also should order a new sender as well.

Spectra tank at RockAuto #CR14 is $122 plus shipping. Looks like the same thing Laysons carries, but they are all the way across the country..
Year One sells a different tank (#F667) for $140, and I can get free shipping if order a couple more small parts. Any input on the Year One tanks? Spectra seems to have a good reputation.

Spectra makes probably 95% of the aftermarket gas tanks sold in the US, regardless of what retailer sells them.
