Lookie what $5000 buys you....

Once it set up, I used some MEK and a rag to clean up the edges. Did you know that MEK eats nitrile gloves?
I found that out today....Two sets shredded within minutes. Later I checked using a "Duck-duck-go" search and yeah....there are NO gloves that are 100% safe from MEK. Butyl rubber gloves are the most resistant!
!
Yup. Very familiar with MEK. Was 'introduced' to lots of 'new' things when I worked at the refinery. Even though I was mostly an inside machinist, I did do some time in the field. The 'field' is still inside the fence of the refinery but the Exxon Baytown is a huge complex and you could rack up lots of miles driving all over it in a company utility truck doing jobs all over the place. I remember guys that used to wash their tools bare handed with MEK.....said it was safe. Yeah sure. Is that why your gloves are falling apart.....when they did use gloves. A lot of those guys are no longer living and were younger than me!

It has been awhile since I updated anything here.
I've put the car on hold until I retired. Since November 1st was the start of that, I'll have some free time to move forward with the car. I've been busy with the other car....

Re-Rebuilding the 440-493 in a 1970 Charger

With the car up and running and mostly finished, I'll start spreading my time on the other projects around here.

2 weeks ago, I noticed a wet spot at the right rear tire. At first, I suspected dog piss since we have 4 furry "children" here.
It didn't taste like piss at all.

Kidding...It didn't dry out like piss would so I suspected a leaky wheel cylinder. When I got the wheel off, it was evident that it was gear oil. I did install new axle seals when I swapped this axle in but I must have had it in askew or maybe the surface of the axle shaft should have been cleaned better. It did have some crud that came off with a Scotch Brite. Maybe that chewed on the rubber seal?
Who knows....
Anyhow, the car starts, stops, runs and drives just fine. The gauges work, the lights work. No horn though.
It does have a Salvaged title so it will need some manner of inspection process before I can title it.

I have a trailer now so I can tow it to a shop for inspection and the DMV for VIN verification.
I want to weigh it too. I am curious as to what it weighs as it sits.
My red car was 3660 with the 318, 904, 8 3/4" axle, the stock A/C equipment but with front disc brakes and booster from a 75 Dart. It was 3751 after swapping in the 440-727 and dual exhaust. This was before subframe connectors and torque boxes though.
Jigsaw is an XH model though....these were the cheaper and more plain Chargers for 1970. Bench seat, column shift and no upper door pads:

XH 63.jpg
XH Abb.jpg

Compare that to the Charger 500 and R/T models....

All this stuff adds weight.

The 383 weighs less than a 440 so I suspect that the car might be around 3700 as is. I do have frame connectors and torque boxes in this car too.

Another possible cause of the axle seal leaking is if the spring that applies pressure to the lip of the seal popped out while you were installing it.... Pretty common problem... Couple ways to prevent that...
1) Use the proper driver tool which will have a step that expands the lip capturing the spring.... Most shops don't even have that type tool...
2) fill the cavity on the back of the seal where the spring is located with grease... It's cheap & effective...

The car was in a parking lot speed collision way long ago. The RF frame rail is bent upward as seen in the pictures.

I had to put a pair of '73 Duster disc knuckles and rotors on it to make it a roller. It might have been a disc car, I don't know. No fender tag and so far no build sheet.

A base model Charger, but someone splurged and got the 383-2V and passenger side door mirror!

Did you find the build sheet, or remnants?

It's getting near time for you to lose the General Mayhem look, and prime it all one color! They have tinted hot rod primers out there in many different colors. Having many Chargers It's nice for a car like this to be the recipient of hand me down parts as you continue to upgrade your red Charger!

Many years ago I had my yellow 70 Charger R/T and another 70 base model Charger, and I primed them both black with a white tailstripe,I put the R/T door scoops and taillight trim on it and the same magnum 500 wheels so they were twins. At the time the price of gas had just gotten over a dollar a gallon, so the 318 Charger was my daily driver, and the 70 Charger R/T was my weekend cruiser, but only one of them was registered, and when someone wanted to race,I would tell them I had to get gas and I would be right back, and go swap the plates onto the R/T and come back and race them! It was a lot cheaper driving the 318 Charger at 15mpg,verses 7 mpg with the R/T. lol

There were shreds of one in the rear seat cushion but just barely a corner was all that remained. No fender tag either. The XH29L0G VIN shows it to be a 383 2 barrel. The 383 engine that came with it has the last 6 numbers of the VIN on it.

I will not drive a primered car. I would rather drive a car that looks like this one. It may seem strange but that is how I am.

Will you go with the original color when it comes time to paint it?

No, I will not.
I've always loved B-5 blue. A few years back I was considering the possibility of taking the red car apart to change colors!

Blue and chrome looks great to me.

I'm certainly fond of my '70 EB5 blue Charger.

Great choice!

A blue tinted satin hot rod primer will give you a preview of what the car will look like done and will protect it while the bodywork is in progress. I got hot rod black on my 71 Charger R/T and it looks killer. I built this car to be a driver and I don't think that I am ever going to paint it. If it gets a chip or scratch, I will break the primer back out and touch it up!

I can appreciate different opinions on the appearance. I’ve driven primer spotted cars before with no shame. I’ve driven cars that were one color but all faded and not been embarrassed. Maybe I like the look of this car because of the Roadkill Charger. Some will think it looks stupid or low class. That is fine. I like that it looks like I just plucked it from a field. To me, it looks like something a high school kid would drive in the 80s and 90s before their value went way UP.
Today I’ve been messing with the wiper linkage.
The right side pivot and arm were missing from long ago. I’ve looked at swap meets for the arms but had no luck. Looking at my red car, it seems like they are the same on both sides. 15”, right ?

Last year at Fall fling in Van Nuys, I bought a set of linkage from a guy that said it was for a 68-70 B body. I just cleaned up the pivots and put the new foam gaskets and donut seals on it all.

Then I pulled out the incomplete linkage from the car.

Oh oh…. I see a few differences.
The bar to the right side is too short, the main bar is also, plus they are shaped differently. Plus…

The pivot is way too short.
The dude sold me the wrong stuff.

I see the 15B. Some of this has been discussed before.

I have never had the linkage out of the red car to be familiar with it.
This reminds me of when I bought a 73 Challenger back in 2002. It was missing lots of E body specific parts and I had to track a lot of things down. I didnt know of Internet forums then so I had to rely on face to face advice on what parts were right.
Back on point:
I looked through the shed and found some more stuff.

Mine is still in the car. Otherwise, I would measure it and post pictures.

When I was in high school and my mom was giving me a ride to work in her 70 Charger R/T SE,it was pouring rain outside and the wiper pivot dripped cold rain water right into my boot! I never forgot that! The car was ten years old then.
