It has been awhile since I updated anything here.
I've put the car on hold until I retired. Since November 1st was the start of that, I'll have some free time to move forward with the car. I've been busy with the other car....
Re-Rebuilding the 440-493 in a 1970 Charger
With the car up and running and mostly finished, I'll start spreading my time on the other projects around here.
2 weeks ago, I noticed a wet spot at the right rear tire. At first, I suspected dog piss since we have 4 furry "children" here.
It didn't taste like piss at all.
Kidding...It didn't dry out like piss would so I suspected a leaky wheel cylinder. When I got the wheel off, it was evident that it was gear oil. I did install new axle seals when I swapped this axle in but I must have had it in askew or maybe the surface of the axle shaft should have been cleaned better. It did have some crud that came off with a Scotch Brite. Maybe that chewed on the rubber seal?
Who knows....
Anyhow, the car starts, stops, runs and drives just fine. The gauges work, the lights work. No horn though.
It does have a Salvaged title so it will need some manner of inspection process before I can title it.
I have a trailer now so I can tow it to a shop for inspection and the DMV for VIN verification.
I want to weigh it too. I am curious as to what it weighs as it sits.
My red car was 3660 with the 318, 904, 8 3/4" axle, the stock A/C equipment but with front disc brakes and booster from a 75 Dart. It was 3751 after swapping in the 440-727 and dual exhaust. This was before subframe connectors and torque boxes though.
Jigsaw is an XH model though....these were the cheaper and more plain Chargers for 1970. Bench seat, column shift and no upper door pads:
Compare that to the Charger 500 and R/T models....
All this stuff adds weight.
The 383 weighs less than a 440 so I suspect that the car might be around 3700 as is. I do have frame connectors and torque boxes in this car too.
