So I have a 1969 Plymouth sport satellite I've been trying to upgrade since I recently bought it , the last owner " fixed the wiring " I replaced the broken circuit board , bad amp , fuel and temp gauges . I also installed the ivr-4 limiter , the temp sensor is new and so is the fuel tank and sending unit , my fuel and temp gauges constantly pulse from empty to almost maxed out , and I also noticed the two wires on the back of the cluster ( one red one black ) are both "hot " is the black supposed to be a ground ? could a faulty ignition switch be causing the black to be hot ?

For your reference see rt-eng.com for IVR characteristics and gauge sources.
You can test individual gauges with 3V or two flashlight batteries in series. Somewhere around 3/4 scale should be seen on the gauges.

The black and red wires are both supposed to be hot. They are on the ammeter and one side is battery and the other is to the alternator. Where is the wire from the condenser plugged? That should dampen the pulses.

I would contact rt-eng to see if they have suggestions. I just looked at their instructions and it says the condenser is not needed. I don't know if this would cause these symptoms. Good luck

I did contact them and I am waiting for a response, just figured id ask here since everyone is helpful, thanks for taking the time to respond

The first thing I would do is put an auxiliary ground from the cluster housing to the body and see what is does. Because from what I see if you are trying to test things with the cluster loose like that it is not going to work right. The ground I suggested is a must do.

pnora i did have it grounded i removed it for the photo , Ron_m ill give this a closer look , thanks everyone ,
