lower control arm moving

hello
i have had front end issues for quite a while, had a few look at it with not a real fix, i had it on the trolly jack today, had a mate steer it left to right and i laid underneath watching what was going on, looks like the lca are twisting/moving, hmm do i remove them and weld plates to strengthen them or what else can i do ??
is this common

i did have a r&p kit but i have removed the kit and back to standard, it has 2"drop spindles for now, i recently replaced uca ball joints and rubbers, new drag link, idle arm, and ball joints, the lca are standard, but like i mentioned they seem to be flexin/moving, who knows what life they have been through before i restored the car

It will more than likely be the LCA bush that's allowing the movement. They can be replaced - it's reasonably difficult for the average home mechanic but will make a world of difference. Search the internet, there's plenty of good articles on replacing them. Good luck my friend.

This is how my LCA bushings looked like...car was all over the place.

As 66 sat mentioned, look around on the web for some instructions, i also used something from the forum i believe and is not a difficult job.

You will require a hydraulic press.

Also when you do the LCA,get the plates and weld them on.No issues with my 71 but seeing how everything was apart for full rebuild, i went and had them welded on,big difference on corning.good luck .

Also how are the strut rod bushings? If those bushings are shot that will let the LCAs move. all of the 50 year old bushings should be replaced.

Look at the tube thats welded into the k-frame that the lower control arm shaft goes through. They can break out on the welds or get egged out. If so, repair time.

Agree. On my setup I used poly control arm bushings and regular rubber bushings on the LCA.

OP mentioned he already replaced several items on the suspension, and the LCA bushings are a good improvement.
but keep in mind that your car drives as good as the worst suspension bushing.

Ok ive started to pull lower control arms out and fitting new bush's

Don't forget to check out the k-frame tubes while the arm is out.

Clamped it together Welded the braces on

Bushs was completely shagged

Good job!
That bush does not look that bad, but for sure takes care of some weird surprises during cornering.
And with the reinforcement welded on it will be a solid drive again!

Did you use new pivot shafts? Looks like it.
I reused mine as there was nothing wrong with them but then found out the LCA inner steel bushing was not tight on the pivot shaft and could slide off by hand. (should be tight)
How are your pivot shafts? Solid secured inside the bushing?

You Americans made such nice cars (back in the days) and are still loved all over the world!
