my next project is to make my nephew a full size basketball frame.

Want thoughts on the steel box tubing and design.

using 4' x4' x .16' ( 100x100x4mm)

main section is 13ft long, 10ft above ground and 3ft below concreted in.
Weld a 3ft length at a 90 degree angle at the top and weld 2 corner pieces in.
Weld a large square piece of flat on end of 3ft section so back board / hoop can be bolted on.

Is the steel box strong enough ?
other designs that might be easier to construct

Thanks, Tony

Sounds good. Just make sure you get the break away type of rim.

The 10' section will behave a bit like a spring but overall sounds plenty strong. Vee out the weld joint area for good penetration. The gusset is good.

Thanks guys, some good advice there Meep-Meep.

Went to pick up the 24 ft lenght of box, wow it was way too long for the BIG trailer we had. Guy cut it into 14 ft and 10 ft pieces. Called in on a friend how builds truck bodies and he said he would weld it up , was going to attempt it myself but happy to let a pro take over. I will cut at box to length and cut the gusset.
Will post a photo of finished frame, hopefully late next week.
