Anybody else using the Mancini Racing water pump? Question about installing it. It was installed on the new motor and it started leaking coolant out the bottom with the engine running, so I removed it to investigate and install a new gasket. It doesn't say "top" on it like others do, nor do the instructions mention any special way to mount it, so not sure if it matters mounting it. If you look at the upper right portion of the pump, you will see the one bolt hole is not rounded like the others, might this signify the "top?"

What would I be looking for when looking for the weep hole?

Is there a weep hole? That should face down.[/QUOTE

Ok, so I went and looked at the pump, and there's a square groove where the arrow's pointing on the picture (is this the weep hole), so that would tell me the oddball bolt hole should be the top?

a weep hole tends to tell you when the pump is going out because it "weeps" coolant.

Well darn, looking at pictures of the water pump before taking it off and it looks like it was installed correctly. Perhaps the gasket sucked (I hope) or the bolts weren't tight enough.

A weep hole looks like a small (round) hole into the pump, (on the outside) and it usually doesn't flow a lot of coolant, it usually just slowly drips or "weeps" so if you're losing a fair amount of coolant I'd bet bad gasket.

Hopefully it was the gasket. Like Zombie already mentioned, when it weeps, it's telling you the seal in the pump is junk for one reason or another, and it's time to rebuild/replace the pump. That hole is orientated facing down. If it don't have one, I guess Mancini is just counting on the coolant puking out of the front of the shaft when it fails. A bit odd, because instead of being forewarned and having a chance to limp it, now it's hood up on the side of the road.

Good luck. I've seen good reviews on those pumps in the past. I know they cool well, especially with the nice cavitation plate on the backside of the impellers.

In addition to the new gasket, would a bead of rtv or some sort of gasket maker be an additional safety net to sealing it?

It really depends,
ive known guys that run nothing but rtv sealant on some surfaces and never have a single problem....BUT,
if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all lol.
guess I'm paranoid, but I always worry about a chunk of rtv breaking loose and clogging a port, so I personally, do NOT, but if you're really tidy with it, and only use a dab to smear it on the gasket faces, you SHOULD be fine, just let it tack up slightly prior to install and once installed, give it the proper set-up time.
its personal preference really.

Ok, maybe this time I will just use the Fel Pro gasket and hope its better than the rubber gasket that came with the WP.

Be aware that if you use some RTV on certain types of gaskets and torque it down the RTV can make the gasket pop out, it kinda acts like a lubricant. Like Zombie said always let RTV set up before adding fluids to assure good sealing. I try to let RTV cure overnight if possible.

DRY Gasket ! If you have pits in your parts alittle Permatex #2 works great with a gasket.
RTV is a Gasket maker and will tend to let a paper gasket push out. Also get into you cooling system and so on. .

So installed the new Fel-Pro gasket, and it seems better. Still seaping a lil at the bottom but I'm hoping that after a few heat cycles (new motor and everything) that the stuff will seal up.

if you used permatex #2 (the black stuff)it can take a day or two to set up...or fully cure.

the fel-pro gasket also good choice.
