Hi,

Got to make up my mind on what cam to go for with the new motor.

Thinking of going for a .660 solid roller. Any thoughts about how long the springs and cam would last on the street?

The car would see about 500 miles at the street a year.

it's good practice that with a cam that big to remove the rocker shafts so that the springs are relaxed to installed height when not in frequent use/in between use and storage.

I run 670 or 680 on the intake - solid lifter <6500rpm - I was told it should last a long time - I was also told there was no need to back off the rockers either. (572 HEMI 725hp)

Myself I did not want to fool with all the spring pressure to run a solid roller so I run a solid flat tappet in my 493 and it works great for me. It got me into the 10's which is what I was looking for to get in the 10's on 92 pump through the full exh. My solid flat tappet is 264 & 270 @ .050 and its .585 & .592 lift but I use 1.6 rockers which gives it about .630 lift. I also dont loosen my rockers during the winter which usually I stop driving my 63 in November and bring it back out in late March. Actually I had my 63 out today as it was in the 60's here in Md. And I start my 63 every few weeks and run it about a 1/2 hr through the winter. Ron

Thanks for the repiles!

Was about to rebuild the original block with a stock appearing combo, but changed my mind and want to save it for the future...

Got a real kick in the butt when my girl asked me if the car was ready for our wedding in April...

The new motor will be a 505 with alu caps and girdle, about 11.7:1 with Indy EZ opened up to MW from Hughes and a Mod Man intake with 6-pack.

Was thinking the 283R-8 from Comp Cams would do a nice job with this set up.
It's going in a 4-speed A-12.

If anyone has a better cam suggestion feel free to post a comment.

keep it under .700 lift on a street car and you'll be good. I would call bullet cams and have them spec out and grind you something with tighter lash for street driving.

Why so concerned about lift? There are more important factors to determine a cam, like LSA and intake closing. I'd start with the LSA and see how a cam with 108 vs. 114 deg plays into your application.

this makes sense. the greater the lift the faster the ramps. this needs more spring and that clobbers parts.

My brother runs a ModMan intake on the 511 in his 64 but he runs 2 Eddy carbs. His 64 has run 9.96 best with it. He has not had any other intake on the eng yet to compare it to. Ron

Regarding the camshaft, lift is the only parameter I want to decide myself - The other data will be better to leave to the pros.

Sent a mail to Bullet, excited to see what they suggest.

As for the Mod Man Intake it was just a easier way to get more power with the six pack setup.

The cost for a full porting on a eddy six pack intake and custom pistons was so high, I decided to put the money in new heads and a cheaper intake instead.

The intake is in customs now, really eager to see how it looks, and see how the height compares to the original.

Lift is certainly a factor but not the end all be all. Just let the cam guru spec the whole thing. Lew is spot on regarding fast ramps but it all depends on what you want out of the engine. For street I'd keep it really smooth for longevity.

Neat avatar. Sanger? More pictures, please...

Thanks! In a way I wish it was a Sanger but still really happy with my 76 Tahiti Tiger Jet. Got it from the original owner and it still has the original gel coat and upholstery! One day I'd like to add that 60's Sanger to the collection!

Pics as requested

you're going to want to call bullet, as i recall they don't really respond to emails well.

That's funny,

Being tired of waiting for an answer from Bullet, I sent in a request to Howards yesterday evening. They just replied now and even answered further questions instantly.
If their cams are as good as their service I might go for their suggestion.
A bit concerned if it's too much, but I'm tempted to give it a try.

281/283 @ .050 112 LSA

Finally I managed to make a decision!

Talked with Alex at comp cams, and got a suggestion that made sense (in my mind).
"Custom" grind 263/270 .650/.651 112 LSA.

Just hoping the parts coming in this month are in good shape...

think again
most comp cams tech suggestions you end up with a chevy grind
make sure any cam from any company comes from a master designed for .904 lifters and will not work on a chevy lifter

Thank you,
it's too late now...

This is my experience trying to buy me a cam:

Hughes gave me a number on a grind (which where impossible to find any data on) and a invoice on paypal at the same time.

Bullet never answered back, not even after I called them.

Howards cams stopped answering after I asked about price and delivery time.

Comp Cams answered me the same day I sendt the request, and discussed what I wanted. Bought the cam the same day.

I guess most of the companies over there are too buisy to sell me a cam. The next time I want a cam I'm going straight to Comp istead of waiting for weeks on an answer that never will come.

You can call "Dwayne Porter" as he is definetly one of the best cam and cyl head man out there. I run a solid flat tappet custom grind he speced for me and he is very nice to deal with. 802-951-1955 this is his phone # and you can tell him I told you to call. You wont be disapointed if you call him. Good luck , Ron
