Ok so I bought the 63 Polara with a 426 Maxi in it, have to thank everyone for their help/input - It does need a new distributor (no vac advance) and new carbs, it currently has chokeless Edelbrock 650's...runs awesome, but would like to make it a bit more streetable... I have a couple of questions:

what plugs are you guys using?
what fuel are you guys using?
what is the best recommended distributor/ignition system?
would dual 600's with chokes work best?

looking for advice/guidance from folks running with 426's so I dont have to reinvent the wheel on this stuff... also, are we able to fit a power brake drum and still maintain the factory headers? would like to go 4 wheel power disc... pics attached...
Dan

I don't think you will find a booster that will clear the manifold.Even if you do the heat will probably be a problem, the manifold temp in that area can go to 400+ degrees.I made a shield tjust to keep the heat off the origional master cylinder. Also one to keep the passenger side manifold from burning the paint off the valve cover.

ignition plus

thanks for the brake info, might have to lose the factory headers and go with some aftermarket to be able to obtain the disc brake mod..... what are you running for a distributor/ignition/plugs/fuel? how does it idle and respond?

Distributor is recurved 1963 Chrysler 300J dual point tach drive, plugs are A32 Autolite, solid wires and I run 101 low lead AV gas, couldn't ask for it to run any better.

Is this a real Max Wedge or a clone? If it is real the last thing I would do is modify it. I would look for correct parts that are missing. I have every max wedge made from 62-63, both Dodge and Plymouth listed by VIN. Either post your VIN or send me a PM if you don't know about the car.

The hemi cars that had power brakes used an offset bracket to mount the booster higher for valve cover clearance, but that was the later B body. I think someone reproduces this bracket but not sure about the linkage. May be worth investigating. Or you may be able to bolt on one of those small boosters. Won't look right but should work well. Hydroboost is a good suggestion too.

If you run the factory manifolds you can use the small Midland Ross A-body booster if you mill 1/4" off the manifold mounting surface but heat is still an issue, with headers I guess you could use just about anything..

I have a bracket that raises the brake booster from a 66 coronet. The car had no motor, so I do not remember what it might have been. It had a bendix booster attached to it, which I used for my power brake conversion on my Bee. I will get a pic or two tonight, and for the right money, I might be persuaded to part with it. It has all of the appropriate linkage included.

master cyl

Stay with disc/drum brakes and run a manual disc/drum master with a heat shield and it will stop fine.

I use a later drum/drum manual master cyl and a heat shield in my 63 MW car with MW exhausts and it works fine.

I have a manual disc/drum cyl and a proportioning valve along with the correct rear wheel cylinders in my 66 Coronet and it stops well with normal pedal pressure.

casting #

@skyman, and ???... casting # is: 1852029-4

the car is a clone/tribute, just wanted to see what folks were running and try to get some lessons learned in an attempt to not re-invent the wheel.

If we keep the factory headers on it, based on what I am seeing and reading we wouldnt be able to get power brakes, but if we go to an aftermarket header it seems possible? dont want to lose the current appearance, but will leave that up to the old man.

its got 11-1 compression and chokeless 650's on it right now... as well as an old school distributor (see pic) & unknown plugs (havent dug into it to deep yet) Thinking at this point is hotter plugs and a better more modern distributor and ignition....super unleaded and some Octane boost... perhaps some 600's with choke?? While it definately kicks *** as it sits.... it doesnt like to idle and wants to go. Just trying to make it as "streetable" as possible, Or more streetable than it currently is.

If the car is a clone do your thing and enjoy.

Any parts you remove, send me a PM with the part number, and if they are max wedge parts, I will buy them.

With headers you can run the power brakes. I have the factory power brake booster on my 63 Sport Fury and it uses a 440 block. I added a dual master cylinder and it has power drum brakes and stops fine. I run Autolite plugs but this eng has Indy EZ heads in my old eng with 906 heads I ran Autolite 74's. Good luck with that awesome car! Ron

Sorry, I cannot find the adapter bracket. I must have used it.
