I am trying to install my mechanical fuel pump on my Chrysler la 318. I can insert in timing cover no problem going straight in. If I point pump arm down I am unable to tilt back and align securing bolts without a lot of force. I think may damage pump arm. However I’ve read and in the manual is says it should be inserted at an angle under the cam. Should I rotate crank to tdc on a certain cylinder? The pump arm seems like a heavy spring. Level of difficulty/finess? Thanks

Turn the engine over 90 degrees and see if it helps. You might be able to see the cam and turn it over till the high part of the eccentric is at 12 o'clock.

Pnora is correct. You’re probably trying to compress the pump arm spring while the arm is on the lobe of the cam. If you rotate the engine you should get off of that “fuel pump lobe” and have an easier time installing the pump

Sorry I’m a rookie in this field. If I remember the timing cover only covers the timing chain (top) and the nub that protrudes of the camshaft (bottom). Rotating the crank would not change anything between the block face and under the timing cover where the fuel pump inserts

Ok, in all do respect you haven’t seen the rest of the repairs in progress

Oh yes it will, turn the engine over till you can easily install the pump. Put some grease on the tip if the arm.

You are thinking wrong. Google some images and maybe you will figure it out.

Here's what's under the timing cover on a small block engine.

The fuel pump eccentric is mounted on the end of the camshaft.
As others have mentioned, turning your engine over will move the eccentric away from the fuel pump arm (as shown in photo) and make it easier to install the fuel pump.

I realized what I’ve done wrong. The short block I ordered did not include an eccentric and I missed installing one. I’ll have to pull motor and install. Rookie smh! Thanks all

Makes no sense. The pump still should of went in place without the eccentric.

In the past an electric fuel pump was noisy . I listened to that drone on our car for a 3500 mile return trip to car shows. It was on the car when we bought it. Came home and put it in a box, what a relief!
In tank electric pump. Quiet as a mouse.

You shouldn't have to pull the engine to do this.

Take a light and look through the fuel pump hole and verify if it's there or not.

I did go in. However I had a instinct in my mind that something was not complete and the instructions WARN “failure to install correctly can ruin…” states pump must go under cam

this is what I can see. Do we have lift off (eccentric attachment) looks slightly different. Mabye I need a longer fuel pump in that no matter the rotation of camshaft pump goes in without hesitation would cause me to think it would never be activated on cycle?

Pull the timing cover off. That will tell the story. I see no cam in there.

Sorry I am not home. Could take a pic of mine. Covers are off. Cam and pump pusher concentric thing are still on.
Home in about ten days.
