Attached is a pic of my pan. Fluid was nice and red, but there was a lot of silver magnetic metal in the pan. I know that some metal is normal. Is this excessive? There was a donut magnet in the pan too. Not sure if that’s stock or not.

Cant tell from the pic. How big are the pieces? Or is it just dust/paste? Aluminum or steel?
Doug

Magnet is stock....at least they have been inside of the cars I've owned. And Doug is right. Can't tell from the pic. How many miles are on the trans and how was it used? Normal driving or rough usage and how long ago was it last serviced? The last time I pulled the pan on my 95 Dakota, it looked horrible inside but it's still going and that was 4 years ago.

I don’t know because I paid $200 for the core. I don’t have any history on it

Any 727 trans I have pulled the pan off after years of use has had a grey coating in the pan and a clump of crud on the magnet (if equipped). I wouldn't worry about it if you are pulling it apart for rebuild. Just check over the internals and clean it out.

That’s the question. It’s just a car show car. It’s a “do I rebuild or do I change the filter and give it a shot” kinda question.

Shinny silver magnetic and the size of salt.

So, you could go ahead and run it, and it might be fine...maybe even for awhile. BUT, when (not if) it breaks down where will you be, in your driveway? Across town with your significant other in the car? Stuck in the car show lot? It's up to you of course but you'll always have that worry in the back of your mind..and then you'll be rebuilding it anyway. And if something fails it could damage otherwise useable parts and cost you more $$

Fluid "nice and red" can mean someone had just replaced the fluid hoping it would go into gear LOL. Then gave up and scrapped it. They are cheap and easy to rebuild. It's not worth the hassle to not do right.

If it’s out-rebuild to stock specs. No more worries after that.

What’s the approximate cost if I bring them the trans out of the car?

A week ago I posted this pic of the worn shaft closest to the pump. Note the wear were it spun. Is it possible the metal I found in the pan is from this shaft? Looks shiny just like it.

That looks like someone damaged a couple of splines then dressed them up with a file.

Just call around for prices to rebuild yours. Ask if they have rebuilt these transmissions before. An older reputable shop might be the one to use.

But is it “possible”?

I changed my mind, I would just put the tranny in and cross my fingers.I think that is really what you want to hear anyways. Good luck!

Not really. I’m building a 440 and both eng/trans are out of the car. If the shaft shavings “could” make it in the pan from the shaft, then I might risk it. There was very little “gray mud” to speak of. If that’s not possible, and the shavings are from inside, then I’ll just take it for a rebuild now while it’s out. I’m $3k into the engine build and don’t want to rebuild a car show trans for the heck of it.
