Looking for some guidance. I’m trying to do everything correctly but I feel like somethings not right. I have my panels down to bare metal. they’ve been sitting for a while so there’s a little bit of rust here in there. I got this BONDERITE C-IC-79 AERO stuff from the paint store that is supposed to metal etch and remove dirt/oil/corrosion. I put it on And washed it off with water like it says to. now my whole panel is turning orange. Is this normal? Do I even need to do this? I’m thinking about just sanding down some of the light surface rust areas and then coating the panel with the corroseal rust converter I have and then primer it. any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not to fond of the rust converting stuff and don’t have any experience with bonderite.
I would just sand the rust off and shoot it with a good etching primer or Direct to metal primer and move on to the next step.

Thank you. I feel like I’m way overthinking this. I’m just gonna spray the stuff.

It’s not a bad thing to be a bit **** when it comes to paint work and it’s best to use products that work with each other. It really is best to stick with the same brands of primers and paints to be sure they work well together.

I got all of the paint/primer/clearcoat from the same paint shop. They are the ones that gave me the bond right stuff as well. I just used it on my doors and wiped it off and they’re orange now so I’m wondering if that’s rust or what.

We use the bondrite etch wipes at my shop. Amazing product. What you have there is a variation of the same product for large areas. The Orange after applying the bondrite is not rust, it's part of chemical reaction of the etching properties of the product.

The surface rust should have been cleaned off before you put the etch wash on. You can still remove it but I would etch the metal again. Then apply your primer or epoxy right away. The etch wash does not have any anti corrosive properties and your parts will continue to flash rust until they are sealed with a prkmer or epoxy. Be careful if using epoxy , some companies don't recommend an etching product under the epoxy.

Take that rust converter and throw it in the garbage,. IF panels are clean there is no need for a rust converter.

I stand corrected the bondrite cic79 has corrosion REMOVAL properties. SO if there was some flash rust this should have removed it for you. Leaving the metal clean and etched for your primer.

Thank you. I appreciate your knowledge on this. I sanded the doors again with 80 grit and used high build Vibrance epoxy primer on them. Now to dry and then skim coat and block sand.the hood is next.

another question: the panel glue on my hood is all separated. Should I glue it again (what product?) before I prime the hood?

3m nvh for the hood, whatever you do do not use panel bond.

It is what 3m recommends for the middle of hoods, roof skins and stuff like that, panel bond or weld the edges. Is stays pliable so it does not show thru the skin with temperature change, hard glues can.
