Report of a military helicopter colliding with a plane. Apparently both are in the Potomac. This is the only info I'm finding at the moment.

Oh ****.

Nick Sortor is now reporting the plane involved in the crash has now been identified as American Airlines Flight 5342 from Wichita, KS, which was reportedly carrying 60 passengers.

Here is the latest:
** It was an American Airlines flight Number 5342 from Wichita, Kansas inbound to Reagan International Airport.

** A police helicopter crashed into the incoming AA flight.

** The helicopter was a Blackhawk helicopter

Horrible. I heard this on the way home from shooting pool the hair stood up on my neck... Prayers to the families and the recovery teams as they will need all the help they can get in the dark of night.

Collision near DCA (Washington National) a couple hours ago, 2 aircraft in the Potomac. 1 Blackhawk with 3 on board, and a regional 2 engine jet with 60 passengers and 4 crew.

Jet was on approach, approx 400 feet altitude and around 125 knots; Blackhawk was taking off. Moments before contact atc said "PAT25 do you see the jet; please cross behind the jet" and then collision.

News is saying nose-up jet dropped on top of nose-down helicopter at the moment. We'll see how it pans out. Prayers for everyone on board, as well as all the first responders in 37 degree water tonight.

DCA is closed till at least 0500, so if you're supposed to fly in or out of there....might want some new plans.

I listened to the ATC on this. The helo confirmed they had the CRJ in sight and were keeping visual separation, twice. I can't imagine what the families are going through.

Absolutely tragic...sounds like there wasn't sufficient time for the chopper pilot to be aware of his surroundings while ascending.

Report this morning said 30 bodies recovered so far, expecting no survivors.

RIP to all 67 people who lost their lives last night. May God be with them and their families!

I do wonder why the TCAS (collision avoidance system) didn't alert the AA flight unless having the blackhawk fly up into the AA plane is a blind spot? There would have been only seconds though.

Yikes, I spent 20 years in Wichita. I got my Master's Degree at WSU. Sounds like the plane was carrying USA and Russian figure skaters.
