I just went through my parts inventory one more time and realized I ordered the wrong Milidon pan since I have an external oil pump. Of course now I need the "oil system" instead of the pickup.

I am also adding a Melling HP oil pump, I am curious if anyone saw increased oil pressure with this set up.

I also ordered a windage tray but wasn't sure I actually needed it, can anyone offer opinions on that?

thanks,

From everything I have read in my Mopar Performance and older Direct Connection guides a windage tray is definitely a good thing to have.

Add an external pickup to the pan. I just did one with a Milodon pan with the tapered sides. I used the Moroso weld up external pickup kit. It was a little tricky because the fitting is at an angle and you have to bend the tube, but it worked excellent.

We dynoed the engine yesterday and the pressure was rock solid.

I ordered this "oil system" which by passes the engine pickup going straight to the pump.

The Milodon system I had fed both the top and bottom of the rotors with oil. That increases volume alot. The one pictured appears to feed only one side of the pump rotors?

I have a Melling hi volume oil pump in my 451. Gets 80 PSI cold and 60 hot. Stock 3/8 internal pick up.

I'm pretty sure you need to supply your own pump too. Then you use the external line to feed the top, or far end of the rotors. I suppose you could also use the stock pick up with this, then the oil pump rotors would get oil from both ends, increasing volume. But I doubt if that is necessary or practical.

Be sure to plug the internal pick up, where the pipe screws in. Just use a 3/8 pipe plug with a good sealant on it.

you have to block of the pickup in the block or youll have major problems

That's a good system, as long as you have a flat side pan that will allow that type of oickup to be used. As mentioned, you will need to block the stock pickup tube hole with a pipe plug.

Summit said it would bolt right up to my Melling HP oil pump I purchased from them, I home that is true.

I got this pan:

See, this is the problem I had, I had shortened the pan for road clearance and had to put the pickup on the slanted part.

This is the pickup kit I used to overcome the angled mounting.

I used a Moroso inline filter too. It's just a bit of extra insurance.

That looks to be the correct pan for your set up. My Milodon 7 qt pan has tapered sides all the way to the bottom. So an external pick up would not work on my pan. But I am using the internal pick up. Nice that yours is vertical at the bottom. And looks like it has the hole there for your external pick up line. I don't think you will have any probs putting that cover on your Melling pump.

Well had a discussion with Milodon and my original pan purchase 30930 with oil pick up 18325 is just fine for my application. So now I will be returning the 30931 and oil system as Milodon said that was for racing and I am not planning on doing any of that.

Yes the stock big block oil system is good to 6000 or even 6500 RPM, provided you have a good pump and oil capacity. Alot of guys like the added insurance of a 7 qt pan. Be sure to use the windage tray. Mopar claims it can be worth up to 15 horsepower at 5000 RPM.
