I did a little test with the map about bomb blast zones if they go after anything in FL. I'd say it would be a major something I'm plenty far enough from anything of interest ! I'll be OK to start the looting!

You think Hawaii needs to reevaluate their public address system? Maybe plan a drill.
Then just maybe confirm that there really are missiles coming in before pressing the public panic button.

I think people in general have misconceptions about how a nuke really affects the landing zone. Many are thinking that it will wipe out everything in a 50 mile radius right down to the dirt and the overpressure wind forces everything in the next 50 miles and then radiation everything in a zillion miles after that. It isn't nearly that bad. The movies have taught us that BS. A 10 KT air burst does about 1km or so of total destruction from blast itself plus the kinetic energy shockwave as it vaporizes rock, water, air, and buildings etc, Outside of that there's another 1/2 a km or so of really bad destruction followed by 4 or so more km's of moderate crap. There are a bunch of variables for this **** though, like height of the airburst, size of the bomb, where it goes off such as at sea level or 22km up in the air. Lower to ground level gets you a classic fireball mushroom cloud and intense shockwaves/drag pressures and higher up in the air gives you less shockwaves and more gamma radiation and x rays.

Do we have any idea as to what kind of triggers Rocket man maybe using?

NK missiles are of the 10kiloton variety. My guess would be ground burst. Takes less technology than air burst. Plus he would want to see the big mushroom cloud to strike fear into the hearts of Americans...and look good on CNN.

I find it interesting that growing up in the 70's & 80's I remember doing Civil Defense drills in school. We would all go into the hallway put our hands over our faces on the wall. Teachers would close all of the classroom doors. I remember the air raid sirens going off at 12pm & 6pm. We used that as when it was time to go home for lunch/dinner as kids. How many of us remember the movie "The Day After" or "Threads".

Now if you're into conspiracy theories what if this really wasn't a mistake but a test to see how people today react. You can certainly see that most people have no idea what to do, where to go...etc... Does anybody know where the nearest fallout shelter is today? We have forgotten so much what we knew during the cold war era. We should be better prepared to some degree, knowing that if a nuclear war were to happen survival would be pretty slim unless you had a fully stocked shelter, air purification system..etc...

People have no clue in general. At least those under 60 years of age anyway. At least we had the school drills and , or, served in the armed forces during the cold war. I'm a little better prepared than most since I did both and graduated from the US Army Nuclear Warfare school.

In 1964 we were still hiding under our desk at school. Buy 1967 we were all going the the basement to a room with on windows.
A little better but still toast.
Buy 1975 the USAF had enough shelter for personnel only. No family members.
When we lived in the city 18 years ago there were people with full fledged 1960's style boom shelters in their back yards and the current residents had know idea they even existed.
In 1999 people were putting survival chambers every where because in 2000 the world was supposed to have fallen apart. Five years later people had know idea where they put them.
Very few people have access to a real storm shelter alone a full fledged boom shelter.
In short most would be better off not knowing it was even comming. Unless its destination can be pinpointed. Then the problem of getting some where safe in all the panic.
