More 727 questions

I am in the process of doing my first 727 rebuild.
The failure that caused the need for the rebuild was in the clutch pack with the belleville spring, the spring broke in half and fried the clutches and even toasted the plastic spacer.

I assume the converter is full of junk friction material.
The converter does not have a drain plug.
How would I go about flushing it out?
Also, the front pump faces are not shiny like I thought they would be.
What kind of surface finish is acceptable?

Put heavy grease on your drill bit and thread tap to grab the steel chips, to prevent them from falling into the converter. I have done this before on converters without drain plugs. I don't think this affects the balance of the converter much, because I think the weight of the plug would be close to the same as the metal removed with drill and tap operation. Just good, old varsol would clean it O.K. Still fairly inexpensive in a gallon can.
I recently asked at Car Quest about some cleaner fluid for my parts washer tank: on sale right now for $140 for 5 gal. Regular price is $185. Wow!

Though cleaning a converter is never a bad idea. I doubt that a clutch failure put enough debris in the converter to cause an issue. All fluid coming out of the converter exits the front cooler line. If you are worried? Place the rear cooler line in a bucket. Run the car in Neutral (not Park). Any debris in the converter will go in the bucket. I've done plenty of race trans repairs without flushing the converter. Seldom is there very much material in the pan during the next inspection.

As for the pump faces. Are you refering to the inner gears, stator support, and pump hosing bore? Common wear will be some nicks/small grooves in the mating faces of the gears. The upper and lower sides of the pump may have some light scratching. I've never seen gears with too much clearance. Just beat up from debris.
