Mr. 4 Speed

Met him in person many times. Great guy.Glad to see them tell the story while he is still around.

Very interesting watch about the birth of Pro Stock! Herb could bang some gears for sure! 440'

Ronnie Sox must have seen something in Herb, he hired him! You're not going to get an argument from me on your statement. 440'
I've only known Ronnie Sox as "Mr 4-speed." And even had the pleasure of meeting once at Beechbend Raceway. Very humble. While we looked at one of his old Pro Stock Cuda's on display. I believe it was owned by then "Hemi-Fred?" (At least that was his handle way back when on MoparChat?)
He explained why his team lost a little time going to the then new Clutchless transmissions. That it was more due to weight and setup rather than his performance with the crashboxed A833. I said. "I like the legend of Mr. 4-speed better?" He just smiled with some appreciation. But never boasting or acknowledging the fact he may very well be the best of all time? (Which of course is too subjective and somewhat moot at this time.)

He was at Carlisle. Seemed like a wicked nice guy. Signing all sorts of stuff with a smile on his face!

Nothing at all against the amazing Herb but Ronnie Sox was Mr. Four Speed.
Ronnie Sox was to drag racing what Jack Nicklaus was (and is) to golf.

Legends never die, and their names should not be abused.:lowdown::lowdown:

Both legends. Herb's 65 had Mr. 4 Speed painted on the side in 65. Ronnies nickname came later I believe. Again, both great guys who respected each other, we can do the same.

Sure didn't recall that.
Both are legends and the best in the business.

Agreed on most all the above too
Herb did have it 'on his car'

In my mind, I think Ronnie Sox 1st thing too
when I think "Mr. 4 speed", just ingrained maybe
I saw Ronnie a lot more & attended a "Plymouth" clinic
with my stepdad Bob too

You can add
Dick Landy
&
Bill "grumpy" Jenkins (he did tune & wrench on MoPars too)
famous for his mods to speed shift manual trans too

both (or all 4) to that list of people that rowed gears
with the best of them

Roy Hill, Jack Rousch/Wayne Gapp,
Lee Shepherd, Warren Johnson, Bob Glidden
later years before they went to Lencos
or Liberty's etc.

In a way it would have been neat to see what Grumpy would have done if he had continued with Mopar but when he went to the competition I think it made the Mopar guys have to keep on their toes.

In the videos there were multiple shots of multiple cars Herb drove that said "Mr 4 Speed" on the side.
It's not that original of a name to think that only one man used it, especially considering the times.
I the vids Herb gave all kind of credit that the Sox and Martin gig was the top of the heap.

I always thought of Ronnie when I heard Mr. 4-speed, but then I learned that Herb used that nickname, too. Ok with me - both legends in my book and they were on our team!!

Herb tells stories about all the other guys you all are mentioning here in that 4-part series -
and he's quite complimentary on most of them, almost reverent at times.
It's quite well done, financed and produced by his son, who is also in the process of procuring
and restoring various items from Herbs' racing past.
A real labor of love there.
